Senior Statistical Researcher
THE INSTITUTE
The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) promotes cooperation for public health
on the island of Ireland. It works in three key areas:



Strengthening public health intelligence
Building public health capacity
Policy and programme development
IPH brings together people and organisations from across the island to promote
collective action for sustained improvements in health. Tackling inequalities in health
and wellbeing is a focus of all of its work.
IPH undertakes epidemiological, statistical and evaluative research including health and
wellbeing monitoring and surveillance, and patterning of poverty and the burden of
disease. It manages several large datasets that are disseminated through the IPH’s
Health Well website (www.thehealthwell.info). IPH evaluates public health policies and
interventions.
SENIOR STATISTICAL RESEARCHER
IPH wishes to recruit a Senior Statistical Researcher for its statistical research and
information programmes. The postholder is expected to be able to cope with multiple
and changing demands and to meet tight deadlines. Intellectual rigour, negotiation and
motivational skills along with excellent leadership qualities and a flexible approach are
required.
The postholder will report to the Institute’s Director of Research.
JOB SUMMARY
The postholder will be expected to:










Undertake statistical, epidemiological and evaluative research on priority health
and health information topics
Conduct analyses of community surveys, routine and other specialised data
Prepare peer-reviewed journal articles, reports and presentations
Participate in applications for competitively funded research projects and other
relevant commissioned work
Provide leadership to the development and management of IPH’s datasets
Oversee the compilation and management of these resources
Liaise with partner organisations to identify and develop relevant datasets
Oversee the development of data standards and guidelines in the Institute
Contribute to the strategic development of the programmes and demonstrate
leadership in achieving implementation
Undertake other activities as may be decided from time to time by the Chief
Executive.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The postholder will have a PhD degree in a quantitative field relevant to public health
and should have at least three year’s post-doctoral experience in a senior role involving
the leadership of relevant research projects and staff management.

Excellent knowledge of relevant statistical, epidemiological and evaluation
methodologies
Advanced competencies in at least one mainstream statistical and data
management software package
Familiarity with qualitative research methods and the role of qualitative enquiry
in public health intelligence
Use of health intelligence


Excellent understanding and demonstrable experience in using evidence to
support policy making and programme development and delivery
Excellent understanding of research and information systems and their
development at local, regional, national and international levels
Communication

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Strong publication record including peer-reviewed articles
Project and staff management


Strong project and staff management skills and experience
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Public health leadership


Strong commitment to public health principles and the aims of the Institute
Excellent understanding of population health and the broader determinants of
health
CONDITIONS
The post is offered on a permanent full-time basis. Joint appointments and secondments
will be considered.
The position will be principally based in IPH’s Dublin office and will involve some allisland travel.
Remuneration is in the range €61,883 - €76,433 or £40,840-£50,443 depending on
experience.
