Timebuilders is volunteering with a difference. People who become Timebuilders give some of their time helping individuals, groups and local communities. In return they receive access to social, leisure and learning opportunities. The more time they give the more they receive in return. This is the essence of our two way street. Timebuilding is based on some simple principles. The asset we use is time measured by the hour. By giving an hour of their time, Timebuilders receive an hour back in return in the form of a paper time credit. It doesn’t matter how they give their hour. It is always worth the same. For example, an hour given litter picking is worth just the same as an hour given teaching a musical instrument. Time credits have no monetary value and cannot be exchanged for goods and services. They are simply a means of exchanging time. They serve as a mechanism to encourage more people to become more active, more involved and to have more opportunities. The equal value we place on time given and the operation of time credits seems to incentivise people to become volunteers for the first time. People who may have thought they had nothing to offer others quickly realise through Timebuilding that they do. By becoming a Timebuilder, people find themselves doing things they would not otherwise have done, meeting people they would not otherwise have met. This seems to be having a positive effect upon their health and wellbeing. And local communities benefit through the use of assets which would have otherwise gone to waste. Whether you are already a timebuilder or thinking about joining we hope you will enjoy our summer catalogue. 2|Page Timebuilders Quotes Timebuilders highlight their positive experiences. Ryan Elesha Sue Pat “I like helping people in need, meeting others and working as a group…I just enjoy getting stuck in, really love it” “Every time I’ve come away from here I’ve always gone back on the bus talking about it to somebody and getting my friends to sign up” “Timebuilding is different from other forms of volunteering…because there is a reward element to it I feel much more able to promote it to other people” “Timebuilders is very accommodating because it recognises that if you are busy you can’t always do things….there’s always another time” 3|Page Earning and Spending Time Credits In a two way street there are opportunities to both earn and spend time credits. Timebuilding seems to work best where earning roughly matches spending. How Can You Earn Time Credits? You can do this in lots of different ways. EVERYONE has something useful to offer. These are just a FEW examples: What Can You Spend Time Credits On? Helping to run community events and group activities Taking part in a litter pick Doing some leafleting Learning how to become a group leader Organising arts and crafts activities Teaching computer skills, a language or a musical instrument These are just SOME of the things you can spend your time credits on: Social events and activities Trips to various places Classes teaching a range of skills Visits to the cinema and theatre Tickets for sporting events Food at the Café On pages 8 to 20 are the earning and spending opportunities available over the next three months. 4|Page How have Timebuilders been earning and spending? We want to improve the way we are working to build a world without waste and you could be part of the action. To really scale up the project and make it more sustainable as time moves on we are looking for volunteer group leaders who will have a key role in this process. And by getting involved not only will you be making a massive contribution to the future development of the project, you will also have an opportunity to further develop your skills. Involvement as a regular volunteer could make your CV stand out from the crowd if you are looking for a job or wishing to increase your involvement as a volunteer in other areas. We expect volunteer group leaders to come from all walks of life. For example students, people seeking a return to the labour market or retired people looking for a great project to get their teeth into. We would like to hear from anyone able to contribute between 4-8 hours per week (days and times are flexible) who will lead a variety of Timebuilder groups throughout the city. The following summarises what we are looking for in volunteer group leaders: A passion for participatory asset based community development A willingness to use and develop leadership skills, to inspire and lead other Timebuilders A commitment to listening to and engaging with people from all walks of life. Great teamwork skills – volunteer co-ordinators work with a wide range of people Reliable and organised – the project depends on a strong commitment from volunteers Be willing to act on initiative and get stuck in! For some people time itself can often be an underused resource. At Timebuilders we do not believe people want to waste their time. We believe they want the time and opportunity to make good use of the talent, creativity, energy and good will which exists in all of us. Running alongside these underused resources is a great deal of unmet needs within our local communities which are far too numerous to list in this catalogue. However just a few of these are the need for: Food and company for people who are lonely Improvement s to the environment Better publicity for local events Accessible learning opportunities Timebuilders is becoming successful in bringing these two things together: eliminating wasted resources and meeting community needs. It runs through everything we do. Based upon what Timebuilders have told us, one of the most positive experiences of earning time credits is that you get involved with people you may not have met before. And you find yourself doing things together and working as part of a team. All these ingredients are reflected in the following opportunities we have available for earning time credits. We hope there is something here for you to get involved in. 8|Page Project FoodCycle: Project Leader Jo Watts Get involved in putting on a community meal which brings people together in a variety of locations. And we are always interested in developing new ways for earning time credits. So if you have some ideas then let us know! 11 | P a g e Spending Your Credits Spending time credits is just as important as earning them. And as with earning, spending credits in the company of others as part of a group can add something extra to whole experience. Spending opportunities or “rewards” are grouped into five categories as highlighted on page 13. The opportunities or “rewards” are made available in the following three ways: Community Rewards This is where one group of Timebuilders earn credits by using their skills, energy and creativity to make rewards available for the benefit of other Timebuilders and the wider community. These are the type of rewards we particularly value and are committed to creating more of in future. Look out for the following symbol in the listings and spend some time credits on these home grown rewards. Corporate Rewards We have developed relationships with various sponsors who provide access to events and facilities because they support what we do. We hope to develop more of these relationships in future, making good use of resources which might otherwise have gone to waste. Funded Rewards We currently have small scale external funding allowing us to occasionally make rewards available, for example, trips and tickets for events. However we cannot rely on the future availability of this funding. Therefore we are aiming to develop more Community and Corporate rewards to ensure the sustainability of Timebuilders. 12 | P a g e Do you enjoy going on trips and attending social gatherings involving food, music, games and conversation? These are fantastic home grown events! Show your support for other Community Timebuilders by spending on these. Learning Are you interested in learning something new? Or maybe practicing a hobby or interest in the company of others? We have groups and courses run by Timebuilders and other community members which might be for you. Would you like to get more physically active? Or experience things which give you the feel good factor? A range of group activities are on offer! Wellbeing There are opportunities to experience as part of a group theatre and cinema at various venues. Culture Sport Do you enjoy watching sporting events? Tickets are occasionally available.
