4/5/13 Egypt Museum Project Instructions Culture Section Calling All Archaeologists!! The Scarsdale Egypt Society has announced plans for a new Egypt Museum. They are looking for help from local archaeologists who specialize in ancient Egypt, in other words – you! The museum is looking for ideas for wings and exhibits. They want to make sure they cover the important aspects of Egyptian culture and history. Egyptologists far and wide are contacting the museum with their suggestions about what belongs in this museum. This is an opportunity to share your work with the world! Here is a chance to show off the research you have done and the artifacts you have uncovered during your illustrious career! Here is what you need to do to enter your ideas and artifacts: 1. Decide which aspect of Egyptian culture deserves its own wing or exhibit. (See suggestion list on the next page.) 2. Fill out an “entry form”. This consists of a four-paragraph paper on why your suggested topic belongs in the museum. 3. Donate an artifact or background story to the museum that they can include in their exhibit. (You will create this “artifact” or story!) 4. Attend a conference where you will present your material and the topics will be voted on and chosen (to be held in P86). Project Step One – Topic Selection In order to offer a suggestion to the museum committee, you first must have a subject matter that you feel strongly about. You will need to choose a research topic of great interest to you. You should feel that no Egypt Museum would be complete without the inclusion of this aspect of Egyptian culture or history. Please look through the sources at your table. Use them to help you make a decision about the topic on which you would like to base your research. Here are some suggestions broken down by the Eight Features of Civilization: Government Hatshepsut Tutankhamen (King Tut) Ramses Akhenaten other pharaoh? military history Writing System hieroglyphics The Book of the Dead scribes Rosetta Stone Job Specialization artisans farming astronomers mathematicians medicine Art/ Architecture jewelry make up tomb painting the Sphinx Social Classes roles of women lives of children Public Works pyramid building tomb building irrigation and the Nile Religion mythology gods and/ or goddesses (one or more) mummification amulets or important symbols Cities trading & merchants fun & games food clothing styles music We can also discuss any other topic you would like to research! My topic is: _______________________________________________ Step Two – Thesis Statement With this project you are trying to prove how important your topic is to an Egypt Museum. In one or two sentences explain why this topic is essential to any Egypt Museum. No Egypt museum would be complete without ______________________. Explain why you feel this way: Step Three – Guiding Questions Now that you have chosen your topic you need to create guiding questions to help you focus during the research process. Write a guiding question for each of the boxes below. (Remember the difference between “thick” and “thin” questions). In the end you will pick at least three to use in your research. Who What When Where Why How Essay Layout Paragraph One – Introduction Paragraph Two – Background info on topic Paragraph Three – Importance of topic to understanding Egypt Paragraph Four – Conclusion Important to Remember!
