Content Deepening in the CCRS – Third Grade Multiplication/Division

There are two sessions for 3rd Grade, Wednesday and Thursday to delve into the different
content. Multiplication and Division will be addressed on Wednesday and fractions will be
addressed on Thursday. You must sign up in STI-PD for both sessions, if you would
like to attend both. However, you may also only sign up for one session, if you only
need one day.
This is our biggest critical focus area containing most of our standards. We will uncover
these standards together through the eyes of the common core writers. We will look at ways
to cluster standards that need to be taught together and determine the depth of each
standard. Research around fact fluency will be a part of the day as well. Breakout groups
will determine how we can have a balanced year of conceptual and procedural based on
best practices and the research.
Content Deepening in the CCRS – Third Grade Fractions

There are two sessions for 3rd Grade, Wednesday and Thursday to delve into the different
content. Multiplication and Division will be addressed on Wednesday and Fractions will be
addressed on Thursday. You must sign up in STI-PD for both sessions, if you would
like to attend both. However, you may also only sign up for one session, if you only
need one day.
During this session, participants will delve deeply into the fraction standards for third grade. What
models should be used? Is there a certain order for the models? In what ways can I introduce this
new concept without students 'shutting down'? How will I know if my students 'get it'? We will also
spend the afternoon testing high cognitive demand tasks to use in the classroom as well as center
ideas. If time permits, we will look at the geometry standard and volume/mass standard. These two
standards are often overlooked but are an important thread linking students' algebraic
understanding in middle school.

progression documents for both of these domains. We will unpack the standards and develop the
teachers’ content knowledge in the standards that are new to that grade level.
