Second Grade Summer Reading Program
Rockledge Elementary
The purpose of the PWCS Summer Reading Program is to encourage students
to enjoy quality literature and to continue developing their independent reading
skills. Student participation in the program is voluntary. Students who choose to
participate in the program are required to complete a minimum of five books.
Students participating in the program in Second Grade will complete a list of
books read. The documentation is to include the name of the author, the title of
the book, and a parent or guardian signature indicating that the student has
completed the reading.
Second Grade students who participate in Prince William County Public
Library's Summer Reading Program, the Public Library documentation will
apply.
Students in Second Grade who read a minimum of five books will receive an
extra S+ for each book completed, for a maximum of five. The summer
reading documentation will be submitted by the student by the end of the first
week of school.
The following titles are suggestions for summer reading. Other books selected by
the student with guidance from a parent/guardian and/or librarian are also
acceptable. Participation in the PWC Public Library Summer Reading Program
and its documentation is also acceptable.

include Digging Up Dinosaurs and the The Story of Johnny

Joanna Cole is the author of the popular Magic School Bus Series.
Each book focuses on a science adventure such as The Magic School
Bus Kicks Up a Storm, The Magic School Bus Gets Baked in a Cake,
and The Magic School Bus Goes to Seed.
Tomie de Paola is the author and illustrator of the Strega Nona
series. His humorous stories are enjoyed by all children.
Gail Gibbons has written and illustrated many nonfiction books that
appeal to children because they are about topics that the children
are eager to explore. Books include Trains, Dinosaurs, Happy
Birthday, Tunnels, and Stargazers.
This award-winning author and illustrator who has written many
classic stories for children. Some of his books you might choose are
Mouse Soup, Owl at Home and Fables.
Ms. Polacco's books often deal with a young person interacting with
an older person. She feels that there are valuable lessons to be
learned by listening to the wisdom that comes with age. Some titles
that you might consider are Pink and Say, Thunder Cake, or Chicken
Sunday.
Ms. Rylant was born in nearby Hopewell, Virginia. Her books stress
the importance of family and all living things. Some books that you
might like are When I was Young in the Mountains or The Relatives
Came.

and their characteristics, their habitats and how they have adapted
to their environment, or just interesting facts about animals.

You may read any books about the rights and responsibilities of
citizenship or books about our American symbols. Some
suggested titles are A Flag For Our Country by Eve Spencer or The
Story of the Star-Spangled Banner by Natalie Miller.
