Topic: Common Nouns Objective By the end of the lesson students will have; - categorized the given nouns into Names Places Things - used the appropriate categories of nouns to complete the Area of Development: Language and Literacy Methodology Recall: Remind the children of the type of nouns they have learned, proper and common nouns. Ask the students to give examples of nouns. Discuss how all these words include names of all the people we know, all of the places we have been to, and all of the things or objects we have. Give concrete examples, such as, “A teacher is person, so I must be a noun. A school is a place, so our school must be a noun. This table is a thing, so the table must be a noun too.” Activity plan: Play the Noun Game. Have students sit on their chairs/on the mat. Give each student an alphabet. Call out any alphabet and give instructions “give me a person name with letter ‘a’/ give me a name of a place with letter ‘b’.” Student with that alphabet card can provide the names. Make a list of these words on the board. Make a chart with 3 columns on the board, labeled ‘People’, ‘Places’ and ‘Things’. Ask the children to sort this name list into the above mentioned categories. Follow up Activity: Focus activity (differentiation through task): Task 1: Children will be asked to write nouns to complete the sentences. Topic: Common Nouns given worksheet. Area of Development: Language and Literacy take it to do a Noun Hunt and write them in the correct column (person, place, or thing, common or proper). Writing Literacy: Play “Pass the Pencil” Have the kids sit in a circle; one student should be in the middle with his/her closed. Pass a pencil to students outside of the circle and stop when the student in the middle claps his/her hands. The student in the middle will then choose a category (name, place or thing). The student left holding the pencil he/she has to say 1 noun. If he/she succeeds, the person in the center stays there. If the person can’t come up with the noun, they then switch places with the person in the center of the circle. (AT) Wrap Up: Read the book “A Mink, a Fink, a Skating Rink: What Is a Noun? by Brian P. Cleary. Lead a discussion about the nouns mentioned in the books. Explain that nouns are all around us.
