Fisheries Fisheries in the Indian Ocean Territories The Western Australian Department of Fisheries (Fisheries) provides the following services on behalf of the Australian Government: commercial and recreational fisheries management; fisheries research and assessment; fisheries community education; aquatic biosecurity services; fish health diagnostic and pathology services; fisheries compliance services; and aquaculture management and licencing. What does this mean for me? Fisheries objective is to conserve, sustainably develop and share the use of fish and other aquatic resources and their habitats for the benefit of everyone, including future generations. Island-specific recreational fishing arrangements and rules will be introduced in order to help ensure that there are fish for the future. Commercial fishing and aquaculture is licenced and managed, and applications for new activities are assessed within a sustainability framework. The Department of Fisheries undertakes research on fish to inform management decisions. School aged children will be offered educational activities focused on: understanding the importance of fisheries management; and promoting community stewardship of aquatic resources. The recreational fishing arrangements have been developed in consultation with the community over a number of years. The arrangements aim to ensure that the fish resources at all islands are used and conserved for the benefit of the local community. 1 Further information Contact Details Contact Pia Dobson, Broome Regional Office Telephone 08 9193 8600 Email indianoceanterritories@fish.wa.gov.au Website www.fish.wa.gov.au 2
