Preparation for the AGM on 13 May

Meeting with NIASP and PSNI regarding the development of a useful guide for crime
prevention in care homes and domiciliary care services – Joyce McKee, NIASP will come
along to SIG meetings in September to discuss this issue. The guide will be available as
voluntary practical toolkit and apply across all sectors – independent and statutory.

1. Volunteers required for RQIA’s Web Portal Pilot
As part of RQIA’s programme of improving how services can communicate with us, we are introducing a
new self-service web portal for providers during 2016. The web portal is designed to make the registration
information on individual services held by RQIA more accessible to them, and will allow online submission
and tracking of areas including incident reporting and changes to your registration.
RQIA is inviting service providers, including IHCP members, to volunteer in a pilot scheme which will launch
in November 2015. If you wish to be involved, please contact craig.young@rqia.org.uk

The RCN are offering the leadership programme for nursing home managers
I am emailing you regarding the forthcoming week long leadership training programme that the RCN are
organising again (due to numerous requests), from Monday 15 to Friday 19 June 2015 entitled ‘Leading for
Care’ for nurse managers/deputy managers in nursing homes.
Please find enclosed a letter from Rita Devlin, Head of Professional Development at the RCN NI, an outline
of the 5 day programme and a booking form.

4. An Introduction to Health and Social Care for Health Care Assistants
Dear Colleague,
Please find attached information on the K101 Programme for 2015-2016. This programme will be of
interest to health care assistants who meet the following criteria:






you can demonstrate that you are committed to developing your knowledge and skills in your caring
role;
you can provide evidence that you are committed to adult learning and/or career development – for
example you have completed recent study at NVQ level 2 and/or level 3;
you can commit to a minimum of 12 hours study per week over 10 months;
you have basic IT skills;
have worked as a Health Care Assistant for a minimum of two years;
your employer can provide a written statement of support confirming commitment to release time
from work: 70 hours over 10 months.

This study day incorporates a practical approach concentrating on understanding the impact
of living with dementia and how to support people to live well with dementia.
*Includes a simulated ageing experience: How might it I feel when I age?
After attending this study day, participants will :-

Gain a greater understanding of dementia, delirium and depression and how this
impacts upon the person
 Experience a practical simulation of the ageing process
 Be able to identify and understand the common causes of stress leading to distressed
behavior
 Discuss the key elements leading to good food and nutrition for people with dementia
 Gain an understanding of how the environments can enable a person
 Understand the key principles of risk enablement and use risk enablement tools in
practice
