In this census the wife Ann Ash (Olorenshaw) is incorrectly shown by her daughter’s name, Jane
1861 Census – Anne in Willoughby
Anne is working as a servant in Pye Court, Willoughby, which must be how she met my grandfather.
I have a picture of Pye Court today, as that is where my friendly host lived when I visited Willoughby.
I think we haven’t really found Anne’s family of origin – In 1841-1851 there are only two Joseph
Olorenshaw families – one in Rugby, one in Coventry – neither have an Ann in their family. Joseph is
5:
shown as the father on the marriage certificate. There are two families with an Ann in their family, both
with father William. All are included here.

Ann Olorenshaw – Original family
In 1841 I couldn’t find them because they spelled their name Renshew. Joseph’s father Joseph
Renshaw (properly spelled) (age 72) and mother Ann (age 64 and born outside Warwickshire)
were neighbours, and had a young family (probably a younger sister Ester of Joseph’s and her
husband) living with them.

Ann Olorenshaw – 1851 Census
In 1851, Ann was not living at home, but was in Leamington Hastings, working as a house
servant to widow Elizabeth Good, who was probably the mother of her sister Jane’s future

They have no children, and Jane and William are not in the 1891 census, so this branch is a dead end.
Early Olorenshaw families
I believe that all of the Warwickshire Olorenshaw or Renshaw families are descended from one family in
the 1750s, and I have found branches from Leamington Hastings and from Bilton, near Rugby. There are
some family trees in World Family Tree and in the Mormon Family Search IGI, as some of the
Olorenshaws emigrated to Utah, USA. I have kept the census records I have found for families not
obviously directly related in case they are useful in tracing Ann’s ancestors further back.
There was another family of Renshaws living in Broadwell, near Leamington Hastings in 1841:

There was another Ann Olorenshaw of the correct age, but born in Rugby, not in Broadwell/Leamington
Spa. It also appears that that family did not have a son Joseph of the age to be a witness at Ann and
James’ marriage.

The other possibility is found by looking for Joseph Olorenshaw (the witness) with a father Joseph. This
turns up a sister Sarah b. in 1837 – could be Sarah Ann?

I have printed and put in the front cover folder the original census sheet, which shows that Joseph Sr’s
family (Sarah now shown as 6) I living next to his parents John Olorenshaw and Esther (60) publican, and
his sister sarah (25) who is the schoolmistress and has 3 young children. Their neighbors include Bilton
school (40 boarding students), the White Lion Pub (maybe John’s?), Bilton Grange, surgeon Hugh Gibbe ,
Bilton Hall – with parsonage, and Mr. Jackson House. Also in Bilton are Richard and Elizabeth
23:
Olorenshaw, both 60 – maybe a brother of John? There is also a Thomas Olorenshaw (47) farm laborer
and wife Ann (46) with 6 children age 6-13 and next door Richard, 15, male servant.
