BDS Herefordshire Newsletter May 2015 Well Spring has definitely sprung and it is time to clean out the tack rooms, get covered in hair when grooming, wash the rugs and wash the mud off the vehicles. We have a full calendar but are always pleased to add to our events and this month we have added an off road rally on 17th May. The Spring Show, which this year was aimed at our Novices and Newcomers was on Sunday May 3rd at Kings Equestrian Centre, Bromyard. The Show was programmed to encourage our recent newcomers to Carriage Driving to start showing. The indoor school was open for practice and guidance in the morning and a number of our newcomers ‘had a go’ before the show started at 1.30pm. The six classes were exercise vehicle classes and all were given plenty of time by our judge Heather Noad, ably assisted by our own Neville Jones as ring steward. Tracey Jones with Vegas won the Novice whip class, all the entrants for this class had attended our training courses in the last two years on. Rhian Ralph was overall Show Champion and Jackie Cartwright reserve champion. Full results are on the website. Thank you to all the helpers and competitors for making this an excellent day. With special thanks to Mandy whose paperwork as usual was very organised. Past Events Our Monnington drive was very well supported with ten turnouts taking part and some wonderful hats. The weather was amazing and the drive around the orchards was as usual a super way to kick start our year. I hesitate to mention that Bess and her passengers won the Easter Bonnet competition. The hats were made by Robbyn McClements. The Ladies lunch was well supported again this month with eight members taking part and two apologies. Future Events We have a cross country drive on May 17th at Treworgan Farm LLangrove. Drive off at 11.30am and bring a picnic. Please contact Kay 01981 540209 if you want to come. The Ladies lunch will be held on 20th May, at the Three Horseshoes as usual. Answers to February quotes - Oh wasn't it naughty of Smudges? Oh Mummy, I'm sick with disgust. She threw me in front of the judges, And my silly old collar-bone's bust. John Betjeman Four things greater than all things are, - Women and Horses and Power and War. Kipling Rudyard The Ballad of the King's Jest. Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride, Friendship without envy, Or beauty without vanity? Here, where grace is served with muscle And strength by gentleness confined He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity. There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent. There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient. Ronald Duncan The Horse, 1954. If your horse says no, you either asked the wrong question, or asked the question wrong. Pat Parelli He's of the colour of the nutmeg. And of the heat of the ginger.... he is pure air and fire; and the dull elements of earth and water never appear in him, but only in patient stillness while his rider mounts him; he is indeed a horse, and all other jades you may call beasts. William Shakespeare Henry V. A horse! a horse! my kingdom for a horse! William Shakespeare Richard III. Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear or a fool from any direction.
