Saving the Sound
Grade: 6
1. Before the spill the Sound was described as a large, beautiful place in Alaska. Where many
sea animals lived. The Sound was an important place because many sea animals live there
such as fish, seals and otters. Along with many other sea creatures.
2. One opinion in the first two pages of the book is that it is one of the state’s most beautiful
regions. Another opinion is that the Sound is one of the most environmentally sensitive
regions in the world.
3. The timing of the spill was disastrous because when the spill happened, the location of the
of spill the spill was too far away from the nearest place that could help remove the oil. So
once the people got there, the spill had spread too far for their equipment to work on the
water, and remove the spill.
4. The statement makes me feel sad because many animals that were in the the Sound at that
time died, from breathing in the oil. Also animals that did not die had to adjust to the bad
water. Another reason I feel sad is because they were never ready for the spill to happen,
which mad the spill even more of a disaster.
5. Some efforts they used to try and remove the oil was they used equipment. One thing they
used was ‘’dispersants’’ which usually work the best. Although the oil had spread too quickly
and was too big for the dispersants to work. So no they were not effective.
6. The spill would effect Bald Eagles because they could get poisoned and die from eating the
contaminated fish in the water. Or could die from eating birds on the beach that had gotten
poisoned, and that bird would poison would kill the Bald Eagle
7. That had an effect on the food chain because other animals depend on the plankton to
survive so other animals would die because of that
8. It helps you understand because it shows you how far the spill actually went, through the
East Coast
9. The spill helped scientist because in the future the information will be used for dealing spills
10. Some immediate effects of the spill were animals were not used to the bad water so they
died. Some long term effects of the spill are some animals might not recover from the spill
11. I think his experience helped him because he knew how to persuade the reader to go out
and try to help
