History Scholarships
3 scholarships available - $2,400 per each high school Junior/Senior
1 - Howard County; 1 - Prince George’s County – 1 - Ft. Meade High School
Who qualifies? * High school junior/senior, whose parent(s) is/are a non-commissioned officer,
and attends a public high school in Prince George’s and Howard Counties
* High school junior/senior, whose parents(s) is/are a non-commissioned officer,
and attends Fort Meade High School
Applicants will be judged on the following requirements:
1. Follow the same guidelines used by the Maryland Humanities Council (MHC) for the Maryland
History Day competition: http://www.mdhc.org/programs/maryland-history-day/contest/annualtheme/. Students are to use the annual theme established by the MHC. Students have a
choice of either submitting a paper or website entry. Priority will be given to the student
whose contents of the theme are tied to Montpelier, Veterans, and/or Maryland history.
2. Deadline for all submittals is March 15.
3. Be prepared to participate in an interview with the Montpelier/American Legion judges each
year on the last week of March or first week of April. The judges will ask questions about the
paper or website, school grades (the student shall bring his/her transcript to include GPA), SAT
scores, and be prepared to describe extracurricular activities. The interview will only be between
the student and the judges. Parents/spectators will not be allowed.
4. Have a minimum of a 3.2 GPA based on a 4 or 4.2 based on a 5.
5. Have scored a minimum of 70% of the maximum obtainable on the SAT score.
6. The awardee(s) of the scholarship will be required to intern for a minimum of two weeks (80 hrs.
over the summer) at either Montpelier and/or the American Legion Post 60 as a requirement for
obtaining the scholarship. The student shall intern prior to the scholarship payment being issued.
If this obligation is not met than the student awardee will forfeit his/her scholarship. The internship
must be completed no later than September 1st of the year of the award. Upon completion of the
internship the check will be issued.
7. If the student chooses a Paper submittal the following criteria shall apply as defined in the
MHC criteria http://www.mdhc.org/files/resources/nhdnewcontestrulebook.pdf as well as the
following required criteria:
1. Papers to consist of 2000 to 3000 words. Any more than 3000 will not be accepted.
The paper’s cover page should consist of the Title of the Project, the Students Name,
whether he/she is a junior or senior, and the Date the Project was completed. The
second page shall have the names of any person(s) who assisted the student and an
explanation of how they supported the student on the project. If the student strictly
completed the Project on their own then it needs to be stated. All Papers are to have an
introduction, conclusion and annotated bibliography listing source references.

2. Student(s) shall submit their paper to the Friends of Montpelier/American Legion Post
60 – Hallie E. Carson Scholarship Fund no later than March 15 of each year. Any

scholarship of any consideration.
8. If the student chooses a Website submittal the following shall apply in addition to that of the MHC
criteria found in http://www.mdhc.org/files/resources/nhdnewcontestrulebook.pdf as well as the
following required criteria.
1. The website’s home page should consist of the title of the project, the students name,
whether he/she is a junior or senior, and the date the project was completed. The second
page shall have the names of any person(s) who assisted the student on the project and
an explanation of how they supported the student on the project. If the student strictly
completed the project on their own then it needs to be stated.
2. The student shall follow the guidelines as described in the MHC’s “Contest Rulebook.”
The student is on his/her own regarding the development of the website. There will be no
assistance from anyone on either the Montpelier or American Legion staff.
3. Student(s) shall submit their website project to the Montpelier/American Legion – Hallie E.
Carson Scholarship Fund no later than March 15 of each year. Any submittal after this
date will void the student application of any consideration. If you have any questions

4. Interested student(s) submitting a website project shall ensure the application contains
the URL so the judges can evaluate.
Note: If a junior is a scholarship winner then they will not qualify to apply in their senior year.
