HUMA 10: Human Sexuality – Classroom Presentations & Debates
“Individual commitment to a group effort-that is what makes a team work, a company
work, a society work, a civilization work.” Vince Lombardi
Introduction
The classroom presentations and debates are exercises designed to allow you to
strengthen your skills in the areas of leadership, interpersonal influence,
teambuilding, group problem solving, and oral presentation. Presentation and Debate
topics will be determined b y the second or third week of the quarter. All group
members are expected to participate in the research, development, and presentation
of your presentation. Preparation will require library research. Groups may use a
variety of sources to utilize in their presentations. However, each group is REQUIRED
to use and cite at least (1) Academic Journal. This can be found in the De Anza College
Library under Scholarly Journal Articles. No changing groups after assigned. No
reading while presenting (although glancing at note cards are acceptable) otherwise
30 points will be deducted. No visuals? 30 points will be deducted. You are the
authority/Instructor for this topic. To further prepare for your presentation, your
group members may need to meet outside of class time.
Debate Format - Each Group Member MUST Present
Prior to your group Debate Presentation, Each Group MUST submit the following item:
- A reference page of cited sources (typed)
Groups who fail to submit this documents beforehand will be deducted points.
• Position Presentation Pro/Con (10 minutes per group)
• Prepare for Rebuttal (2 minutes)
Additional Debate Information
Each group is required to use power point Audio/Visuals, may also include but not
limited to, handouts, charts, transparencies, slides, audio and videotapes, etc. Please
keep videos/Youtube to a length of one (1) minute or less. Team members are
prohibited from speaking to the audience or opposing team except at the times
specifically allocated to them. Thus, there can be no immediate, reciprocal interchange
of comments between the teams. As for the rebuttal, only information used during the
Position Presentation may be debatable. If you fail to follow this, you will be deducted
points.
Selection of Winning Group
Audience Vote: The class will vote by secret ballot to determine a debate winner. Votes
are to be based upon quality and the validity of the team’s presentation NOT upon
personal agreement or disagreement with the topic assigned. After all ballots are
collected, the number of votes for each team will be announced. Whichever team has
more votes will be the winner.
