Director: Undergraduate Education in School of Clinical Medicine

The Wits Faculty of Health Sciences is committed to the education of health professional
graduates who are responsive to the health needs of the South African people. To achieve this
end the Faculty has created the Directorate of Undergraduate Education in the School of
Clinical Medicine. This directorate represents a key position in the revitalised environment for
faculty education. It will work together with an Assistant Dean: Teaching and Learning as well as
a restructured education unit. The Faculty invites applications from suitably qualified
individuals.
Qualifications and expectations
MBBCh with postgraduate qualifications in education and/or a speciality and/or evidence of
substantial engagement in educational issues OR a PhD in health sciences education together
with experience in managing a medical education programme in a complex environment. The
academic level at which the successful candidate will be appointed depends on experience,
educational qualifications and research record.
The successful candidate will have a proven record in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
It would be an advantage if the candidate demonstrates the ability to direct research in the
field of health sciences education and occupies an influential role in the growing discipline of
health science education both within their institution and nationally. International candidates
will need to demonstrate the capacity to work in different contexts as well as an appreciation of
South African health service and its relations to the delivery of teaching.
The Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) is an integral part of the MBBCh degree at
Wits. This programme has been a leader in the field in South Africa; and, the successful
candidate must demonstrate an understanding of this programme. Proven leadership capacity
in the area of curricular innovation and development would be preferred.
Duties
The successful candidate will provide leadership for and coordinate the delivery of the MBBCh
programme as well as engage with associated educational activity in the Faculty.
The incumbent will be expected to:
 Contribute to the educational vision and leadership within the School of Clinical Medicine
and more broadly at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level
 Supervise the activities of the MBBCh Programme through management of both academic
and support staff implementing the performance management and enhanced quality
assurance processes
 Manage the MBBCh programme content including the use of mapping current content
against suggested Wits, HPCSA and international profiles






Promote internationally recognised methods of teaching, learning and assessment through
extensive staff development and review of current practices
Provide leadership in research and scholarship. Create research opportunities within the
programme and empower staff to engage in meaningful scholarship
Develop and enhance interprofessional collaboration for the development of appropriate
health professional graduates
Liaise with the Assistant Deans of Student Support and other key role players in providing
academic support to students who are struggling for a range of reasons
Interact with relevant stakeholders especially the Assistant Dean: Teaching and Learning to
expand the capacity in the Faculty for training medical doctors, both in terms of
accommodating larger student numbers as well as expanding the clinical training platform
Support other undergraduate programmes within the school as well as students who may
enter the South African programmes from other learning venues such as Cuba
