Grading and Evaluation: Formative assessment Summative assessment (assessment FOR learning) (assessment OF learning) Formative assessment helps the teacher and Summative assessment tells the teacher what student determine what is going well, and the student HAS accomplished. Summative where improvement is required. Formative assessment is used to determine what grade a assessment is used to help to student learn, not student deserves. Summative assessment will necessarily to give the student a grade. most likely be in the form of a test. Ideally, a student will practice a concept many times during class and at home. The student will ask questions for clarification and enrichment. The student will be assessed formatively to help them learn the topic. The student can then expect a summative test on many topics to determine their grade. Classwork, homework, and problem solving: Homework will be checked for completeness and corrections. Most of this assessment will be formative, and will factor into the students work habits score. Quizzes: A quiz will be given regularly and will be based on the previous homework assignments. Most of this assessment will be formative, and may factor into the students work habits and course grade. Tests. A test will be given following the completion of each learning target. The unit test will consist of both multiple choice and open-ended questions and will cover all material previously assessed. This assessment will be summative. These results will have a major influence on the student’s letter grade. Course Goals: It is the goal of this course to develop good math skills in each student as outlined by the course’s learning outcomes (http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/math_foundations_precalc10.pdf), and to have every student make an appropriate choice for their grade 11 course. Every student is required to pass a grade 11 math course to graduate. Students taking Foundations and Pre-Calculus 10 must choose between Foundations 11 and Pre-Calculus 11. To aid students and parents in their choice for grade 11, several key outcomes have been identified and will be used to determine an appropriate recommendation for each student. Foundations 11 This pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for postsecondary studies in programs that do not require the study of theoretical calculus like Economics, Geography, Arts or Humanities. Class assessment: Assignments Quizzes Tests Final assessment: Upgrades: Pre-Calculus 11 This pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs that require the study of theoretical calculus like Sciences or Engineering.
