ECSS New Work Item Proposal (including Working Group Terms of Reference) NWIP-006 Issue 1.1 25 Jan 2012 Gyros terminology and performance requirements CHANGE LOG Issue 1.0 22ND November 2011 First Version sent for TA Vote for Approval Issue 1.1 25th January 2012 First revision 1 Purpose of NWIP The purpose of the NWIP is to initiate an ECSS WG aimed at producing a Gyros terminology and performance requirements standard, analogue to the ECSS-E-ST-60-20C (“Star sensors terminology and performance specification”) already produced for the star sensors, taking benefit of existing standards on gyros (see §4). 2 Justification and Scope of document Some gyros terminology and performance requirements information are spread over several documents, mainly gyros suppliers (proprietary) documents and IEEE standards. The IEEE standards insist more on the general specification, the testing and the qualification process than on the performance requirements. A synthesis on the gyros terminology and functional performance is needed - to define a terminology consistent with the diverse gyro technologies and in line with the gyros user needs, - as well as to define performance metrics and comprehensive performance requirements specification that will allow comparison of gyros from differing suppliers Four main topics are intended to be addressed in the draft document: 1. Terminology 2. Descriptive overview 3. Functional requirements 4. Performance requirements. The verification topic is restricted to performance requirements verification. The other verification topics are considered tackled in other standards and technology-specific in some aspects ; the completeness of this new standard and its consistency wrt other existing standards will be an objective of the WG. The terminology chapter will encompass the terms from the gyro users semantics rather than the gyros manufacturers detailed vocabulary, in order to avoid terms which are specific to Page 1 of 4 ECSS New Work Item Proposal (including Working Group Terms of Reference) NWIP-006 Issue 1.1 25 Jan 2012 gyros technologies and/or gyros suppliers as well as not used outside of the gyro suppliers internal documentation. The descriptive overview will provide description of the main types of existing gyros and of their main components as well as a digest of the diverse technology principles used (FOG, HRG,…). The functional requirements chapter will address redundancy architecture, time synchronisation and time tagging, start-up and transient behaviours. The performance requirements chapter will list and define the performance requirements of gyros (e.g. Angular random Walk, Rate Random Walk, Bias Instability,…), the related errors sources as well as the recommended verification method(s) (i.e. Allan variance). The detailed scope shall be defined by the WG during its first working meeting. 3 Intended programs and target users All types of European Space programmes embarking gyros. 4 Inputs for WG activities The draft shall be consistent with the complete set of ECSS standards. The WG shall prepare a work-plan for its activities conforming to the milestones (see §6), and describing the schedule of activities and resources needed to achieve the schedule. b. The WG shall prepare for information and checking, an outline of the proposed standard identifying at least the table of contents and possible source documents to generate the standard. c. The WG shall issue a first draft of the standard to get feedback from experts and project representatives from industry and agencies d. The WG shall produce a draft of the standard in line with the scope and the convenor shall send it to the ECSS Secretariat for checking conformity. e. The WG convenor shall resolve with the ECSS Secretariat any comment from the conformity check, involving the WG if the comments impact on the technical contents. After resolution of the comments, he shall produce a final draft for Review. f. The WG convenor shall update the draft with the accepted dispositions to the DRRs, involving the WG if the changes to introduce affect heavily the technical content of the standard, and submit the final draft to the ECSS Executive via the ECSS Secretariat. 6 Milestones April 2012 WG kick-off (detailed scope of the document) Q3 2012 Document outline draft Q1 2013 First draft issue Q2 2013 Review of comments from experts and project representatives from industry and agencies Q3 2013 Q4 2013 Submit WG draft for conformity check Submit WG draft for formal review Page 3 of 4 NWIP-006 ECSS New Work Item Proposal (including Working Group Terms of Reference) Issue 1.1 25 Jan 2012 7 WG composition The WG shall include representatives from gyros users and experts from the AOCS community (agencies, Gyros procurement, AOCS architect, Gyros suppliers), as support to the document preparation. 8 Manpower and missions WG Chair and supports To be refined at Kick-off meeting TBD man-year 9 Outputs The outputs of this NWIP should be: - work plan - periodical progress reports - outline of the document - first draft of the document for comments - draft of the document for conformity check - draft of the document for formal review - Updated draft after public review. 10 Originator This section shall contain the name, organization and address, telephone number, e-mail of the originator.
