IGEM PRESS RELEASE: 7th July 2010
IGEM ANNOUNCES SECOND MEMBERSHIP GRADE FOR DOWNSTREAM ENGINEERS
The Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers is to launch a higher grade of membership specifically
designed to recognise the expertise of people carrying out work on gas installations and appliances
throughout the UK. The first grade ‘Gas Technician’ was made available earlier this year and is open to
all Gas Safe registered engineers.
In addition to holding Gas Safe registration, this higher grade requires installers to demonstrate that
they are operating at a higher level of competence and superior customer service. This presents an
opportunity for engineers to differentiate themselves further from their competitors and completes the
stepping stones that lead to Engineering Technician, the point at which their professional standing will
be recognised by the Engineering Council.
Jeremy Bending, President of IGEM said: ‘IGEM recognise the importance of the Technician role within
the gas industry. By creating this additional grade, we can help raise the profile of Technicians by
working closely with key stakeholders within the newly formed National Technician Council to achieve
its overall aims.’
The proposed ‘Licensed Gas Technician’ grade will be introduced at this year’s Installer Live event in
September 2010.
