his reign in an energetic fashion. In 341-42, he led a successful
campaign against the Franks, and in the months of 343 he visited
Britain, crossing the channel in the dangerous winter months in
response to a military emergency, possibly to repel the Picts and
Scots. Regarding religion, Constans was tolerant of Judaism and
promulgated an edict banning pagan sacrifices in 341. The Roman
historian Eutropius says he "indulged in great vices" in reference
to his homosexuality; and that he had a reputation for scandalous
behaviour with "handsome barbarian hostages")

Thracian river god, Danube), was anancient Greek colony near the
mouths of the Danube (known as Ister in Ancient Greek), on the
western coast of the Black Sea. Established by Milesian settlers in
order to facilitate trade with the native Getae, it is considered the
oldest urban settlement on Romanian territory. Scymnus of Chios
(ca 110 BC), dated its founding to 630 BC, while Eusebius of
Caesarea set it during the time of the 33rd Olympic Games (657656 BC). The earliest documented currency on Romanian territory
was an 8-gram silver drachma, issued by the city around 480 BC)

Gorgoneion (Gorgon), hair of snakes, protruding tongue.
Rev: Anchor, monogram “A” (coin of the Apollonians),

silver coin, very attractive raised details. Reference: SNG BM
Black Sea 160. Very SCARCE.(Around 610 BC, Ionian Greeks from
Miletos established an important outpost on the western Black Sea
coast. Originally called Antheia, the city quickly became a
prosperous trading post and became an important cultural
metropolis. The 5th and 4th century BC coinage of Apollonia Pontika
reflects that city's origins: commercial wealth and maritime power.
The gorgon was a popular apotropaic device, seen as warding off
evil; thus a number of ancient Greek cities adopted it as a coin
design. The anchor and the crayfish attest to the city's reliance on
maritime commerce for its economy, and the anchor depicted on
these coins is actually one of the first anchors of modern design
rendered in Greek art. Medusa, the Gorgon of ancient Greek
mythology who was killed by Perseus, is not only the ugliest female
visage ever to appear on the face of a coin, she's also, arguably, the
ugliest female visage imaginable on a circulating coin)

from 1118 to 1143. In the course of his 25 year reign, John made
alliances with the Holy Roman Empire in the west, decisively
defeated the Pechenegs in the Balkans, and personally led
numerous campaigns against the Turks in Asia Minor. Historians
described John as short and unusually ugly, with eyes, hair and
complexion so dark he was known as 'the Moor'. Yet despite his
physical appearance, John was known as Kaloïōannēs, "John the
Handsome" or "John the Beautiful". The epithet referred not to
his body but to his soul. John was famed for his piety and his
remarkably mild and just reign. He is an exceptional example of a
moral ruler)

Kingdom of Cilicia from 1226 to 1270. He was a major player in the
political struggles and shifting alliances around the Crusader states,
as the Armenians had ties with all sides. They were primarily aligned
with the Europeans , but during his reign, the expanding Mongol
Empire became a concern. As the Mongols approached the borders
of Cilicia, King Hetoum made a strategic decision to submit to
Mongol suzerainty. Largely as a result of his active support of the
Mongols, the Kingdom came under increasing attack by the
Egyptians who invaded in 1266, taking 40,000 Armenians captive,
including his son, Leo. He was able to ransom his son by conceding
territory to the Egyptians. In May 1268, the allied Principality of
Antioch was overrun by the Egyptians.Hetoum abdicated in 1270 in
favor of his son Leo, and lived out the rest of his life in a monastery
as a monk
