My name is Ming Gao. I moved to the United States (U.S) about six years ago from a small city in China. My first language is Korean, because my family is Korean based and I was taught to speak Korean even before I received any formal education. I was also very fortunate to learn Chinese while living in China. However, all of my confidence in language came to a halt when I moved to the U.S. I had to go through numerous language programs in school in order to adjust to the new environment. One thing that made a huge impression on me was the fact that the people around me were always enthusiastic about helping me with language. They were always kind and patient enough to guide me through my hardest time. This experience of mine definitely contributed to my innate interest in helping others, which is also why I was interested in this peer advisor position. Currently, I’m pre-majoring in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), and I’m looking forward to take more major classes in order to explore more in this field. I also have a huge academic passion in physics and philosophy, and I’m hoping to take more classes in these two areas if I have enough scholarship money to cover the cost of tuition. That being said, I also like to engage in intellectual discussions with people. From teachers to peers, I always get great satisfactions by having intellectual discussions with others. This intellectual curious nature of mine is the fundamental reason why I applied this peer advisor position. I have a myriad of personal hobbies and interests. For one, I love soccer. My favorite professional soccer team is Manchester United. My favorite player on the team is JiSung Park. He is South Korean, and his profound skills in team work and amazing ability in humanitarian work made not only me, but also the entire country of South Korea very proud. He led South Korea to Semi-final in 2002 World Cup, which is inarguably his most significant contribution to the history of South Korean soccer. He is definitely one of my all time favorite athletes, and I’m proud to have him to be on the list. Besides soccer, I also like play basketball. I played varsity when I was freshmen in high school. My competitive spirit in sports also defines another personality of mine. Not only in sports, I’m also very competitive in academic area. I never wanted to admit that I was a perfectionist, but after a year of education in college, I realized that I have numerous traits that represent my perfectionist like nature. Besides this peer advisor position, I also have another research position at the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics. My mission is to place a biological device above mice’s hearts. My advisor and I basically want to turn bad hearts into good hearts by controlling the pressures that go in and out of hearts. I feel very lucky to be chosen to work in this research area, and I’m looking forward to make a huge contribution in the frontier science. In summary, I’m a person with a strong cultural background, a huge passion in learning, and a most competitive spirit in sports. However, I also have a kind personality that most people like. I’m very easy going and approachable. So, don’t be afraid to approach me. Talk to me, and you will realize that I’m an interesting person.
