Carolina Beach Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee November 3rd 2014 7:00 PM Present: Duke Hagestrom Heather Kinne Charlie Thomas Lonnie Lashley Absent: John McGuire Jason Kessler Mike Callahan Christina Dees Eric Jelinski (staff) Tim Murphy (staff) ITEM #1 Adam Myer-Skate Park Presentation Wilmington resident Adam Myer presented ideas on ways to improve CB Skate Park He spoke about certain maintenance issues and the group discussed ways to alleviate problems. Trash cans can be moved into more advantageous positions to help with trash issues Engage the youth to help with vandalism problems. Encourage skaters to help prevent others from vandalism Address graffiti removal on the bowl and bank part of the park Spoke about safe paints that will not make the surfaces too slick Lonnie mentioned contacting the gazette for a possible article We talked about collaborating with skaters to hold future events at the park Eric spoke about having the rec leaders help with new and creative ideas for the park and competitions. ITEM #2 Youth Room Renovations Eric talked about what needs to take place before beginning project; removing old equipment, clean room and install flooring. Eric spoke about new ideas for the youth room learned at the NRPA conference including game console controllers charged from exercise bikes. Eric and the committee agreed that a good idea would be to involve the local youth in a focus group to receive input on room ideas. Spoke about ways this group meeting would be facilitated by staff Tim recommended emailing local youth found in the rec center database to get a sense of interest Lonnie recommended a timeline be in place for the completion of the project Item #3 Christmas by the Sea Eric explained that the event would be moved to the lake this year and coincide with Lights by the Lake The gazebo will be enclosed and transformed into Santa’s workshop Island Women have agreed to paint while island Men would help in the construction of the walls, ect Heather informed staff about the mailbox idea where kids can drop off their letters to Santa, the Post Office could not provide an old mailbox. We spoke about the possibility of making one. Agreed upon the date of December 13th for Cookies with Santa event Duke discussed possibility of incorporating a storytelling section Discussion moved to ideas for this year’s Christmas float (many themes were discussed) Heather offered the idea of purchasing matching sweatshirts for staff and committee to wear to the event. Item #4 Park Improvement Discussion Eric spoke to Todd at Landscapes Unlimited about seeding the multi-use field at MC park Plans will be in place to re seed field upon completion of PISA season Duke offered that the most important step will be watering the field Eric spoke about the lights maintenance at MC park has significantly hurt our parks maintenance budget Duke suggested digital codes for lights in the future Eric spoke about the future removal of some tree limbs in the residents yard at McDonald Park Eric said some possible plans at McDonald include: relocating swingset, pushing back playground mulch and having landscapers perform a more thorough cleaning Heather spoke about the possibility of moving the gazebo Item # 5 Programs Eric conducted a brief recap of the Halloween event The group discussed the possibility of changing the event to a Fall Festival next year Duke suggested having multiple activities could happen on the different fields at MC for a possible Fall Festival Event Lonnie expressed concerns over parking Duke shared his thoughts on a “Friends of the Park” program and offered the positives a program like that could bring Eric spoke about the possibility of coordinating with Fort Fisher/Kure Beach like Island Day Tim gave a rundown of the youth basketball program progress Meeting Adjourned
