Leo the Lucky Dog
Leo was an intensive care patient at DRVC for more than
a week after eating chicken on a skewer stick. The stick
perforated his bowel in 2 places & he needed surgery to
repair his caecum & colon & he had severe peritonitis to
contend with. Happily he is making an excellent recovery.
Not bad for a 12 year old Golden Retriever!
Whisky Needs a Home
Whisky is a handsome Mini Schnauzer / Poodle x looking
for a new home with a young family. He is 5 years old & is
up to date with all his health care. He has a lot of energy
& needs plenty of stimulation. He likes to be with people
all the time. If you would like to give Whisky a new home
please call the surgery on 9751 2999.

THE LOREM IPSUMS
SUMMER 2016
Demadex Mite
Sarcoptic Mange
It’s the Itchy Time of Year Again!
Spring & summer are the seasons notorious for allergic
skin disease, hayfever, atopy & ticks. Pollens can cause red
eyes, itchy ears & sneezing. Certain irritant plants like
wandering trad (jew) plant can cause severe skin welts &
an intense itch. Usually the affected areas are those with
less hair like the groin & under the armpits (front legs). We
often diagnose allergies as a matter of elimination &
looking at the affected areas of the body. Some tests we
might do in the consultation are skin scrapings & sticky
tape skin preps. Skin scrapings & sticky tape prep tests can
discover bacteria, inflammatory cells & yeast on the skin.
They can also help diagnose mites that live in or under the
skin. Demadex mites are usually transmitted from the
mother to her puppies at birth. They aren’t contagious to
other dogs & they don’t cause much itching. They do cause
areas of patchy baldness around the head & sometimes
feet & the whole body. Certain breeds like Staffordshire
Bull Terriers are prone to demadex infection. It is difficult
to treat & generally affects puppies up to ~12 months of
age. Sarcoptes mange mite infection is very contagious &
causes intense itching. It can be caught from mangy foxes
or wombats & can affect the head (esp. eyes & ears),
elbows & whole body. It is very difficult to diagnose as only
1 or 2 mites may account for large areas of hair loss &
finding a mite on a skin scraping would be lucky.
Sarcoptes mites are easy to treat however. Topical
preparations like Revolution & Advocate can eradicate
sarcoptes mange mites after 1 or 2 treatments.
Larval stage ticks can be difficult to treat. They are very
irritating to small dogs & cats particularly. The immature
ticks are minute & feel like small scabs along the inside of
the front legs & in between the toes or under the belly &
along the ear edges & eyelids. They attach to pets when
they walk through grass. Treatments like Advantix for
dogs (TOXIC to CATS) or Frontline for dogs & cats applied
every 2 weeks can help.
Allergies / atopy is impossible to cure. We can only
manage the symptoms by avoiding further contact with
irritant plants or dust / pollens. Medications include antihistamines, herbs, cortisone, hyperimmune vaccines &
cyclosporine to reduce the body’s reaction. Cyclosporin
(Atopica) is usually very expensive but has less long term
side effects (eg. diabetes, liver & kidney failure) than
cortisone. This summer we have a special on Atopica:

Oh What a Night!
THE LOREM IPSUMS
SUMMER 2016
The Cup Eve Gala was another fantastic night of fun. This year the proceeds
went to the Victorian Animal Aid Trust at Coldstream & Sassafras Primary
School. >$3500 was raised this year. A highlight was the 3 mock horse races
with this year’s winners being: Cream at Sassafras, Wild Oak Café & Troy
Animal Health. Other standouts were the cocktail fountains & Dave Allen &
Ronnie Soul who had everyone up dancing. Thanks to all those who attended!
Stay tuned for next year’s details.
Festive Toxins!
While we are celebrating the festive season don’t forget that
some things are toxic to pets including:

Grapes, raisins & sultanas (& Xmas cake, pudding)

Macadamia Nuts (& Fruit Mince Pies)

Chocolate, alcohol & onions / garlic
Other food isn’t toxic but can make your pet sick or develop
pancreatitis:
Fireworks Phobia!

Cooked bones, pork crackling, ham & sausages

Cheese, sauces, gravy & cream / butter

Raw seafood
Many pets get frightened by fireworks, thunderstorms & loud
noises at parties during Xmas & New Year. Some tips:

Place your pet in a small, secure room with some familiar
toys & perhaps music

Only reassure her when she is calm & rational

Try a thunder suit, dog appeasing pheromones, natural
Calm herbal solution, desensitizing CD’s or anti-anxiety
medication (script needed). Call us on 9751 2999.
