Involved with the following; Embryo development in different temperatures and benthic substrate type; culture of live feeds and enrichment procedures; collection of new larvae and assessment of survival from stage 1 through to stage 3; daily husbandry of broodstock and larvae culture vessels; testing and developing methods with the Aquahive system with both Homarus gammarus and Nephrops norvegicus to post larval stages; settlement behaviour of post larvae and substrate analysis. Orkney Lobster Hatchery: Working with both Nephrops norvegicus and Homarus gammarus in culturing larvae. Design and installation of full custom designed systems for the growth of Nephrops norvegicus. Daily maintenance and husbandry for both Homarus and Nephrops including staging and daily feeding from stage 1 – 8. Aquarium Manager / Technician: Refurbishment and management of the University of Hull’s aquarium at the Scarborough campus, including daily inspections and water analysis, routine maintenance of the livestock and facilities. Mentoring of the undergraduate students for their final year projects. PhD Research: Investigating how to reduce stress for the transport and growth of embryos in Nephrops norvegicus. Engineering of culture vessels for optimising larval rearing in all development stages. Optimising larval feed and investigating larval feeding behaviour. Burrow behaviour and settlement of post larvae to juveniles. Dissemination: Involved with public speaking at conferences, giving tours of the aquarium facilities, lecturing and the education of school children. Development of the online resources for the FP7 Nephrops Project website. Page 1 Boat Handling and Sampling: Field based experience in grab and trawl benthic sampling, sediment analysis, plankton trawling and identification and long line fishing. Key Skills Curriculum Vitae Aquaculture: Extensive knowledge and experience in crustacean culture techniques. Currently a research assistant working on EU FP7 project to develop culture techniques in Nephrops norvegicus. Have experience in a range of aquaculture facilities working on crustaceans and aquaponics. Ecology: Ecological knowledge of the marine based ecosystem including aquatic zoology, species identification and taxonomy with enhanced field-based data collection skills and experience. Statistics and Software: Experience in using GIS software to create maps, images, and manipulation and extraction of data. I am able to use statistical software such as R, Minitab and PRIMER-E v6 and use MS suite to deliver scientific reports and presentations. Ethowatcher for behavioural analysis and data collection. Population modelling: MSc thesis in collaboration with the Cape Eleuthera Institute to estimate juvenile lemon shark populations (Negaprion brevirostris) in conjunction to environmental variables. Use of population model software (‘MARK’ and ‘CAPTURE’). Behavioural Analysis: BSc thesis analysing the role of urine in co-specific communication in the Carcinus maenas through displayed behaviours. Larval feeding behaviour and adult behaviour related to captivity and stress in Nephrops norvegicus. Fisheries Resources Assessment and Management: I have practical knowledge of a number of population dynamic models including growth models (eg the Von Bertalanffy growth formula), Maximum Sustainable Yield curves, mortality and survivorship models and dynamic pool models of production. Integrated Coastal Management: I have conducted social surveys of key stakeholders to analyse their perceptions towards proposed developments in the Tees Estuary.
