Epilepsy Symposium

Day 1 - Friday June 5, 2015

Goals and objectives:

1.

Provide an overview of seizures and epilepsy from pathophysiology to clinical characteristics of epilepsies in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.

2.

Review basic concepts and potential pitfalls of routine EEG and video-EEG monitoring.

3.

Provide an update on new terminology and an overview of the IOM report.

4.

Focus on special considerations in epilepsy including women with epilepsy, stress and mood disorders in epilepsy, and medical cannabinoids (marijuana).

5.

Review the medical treatment and prognosis of epilepsy.

6.

Define drug resistant epilepsy and discuss the indications, approaches, and outcomes of epilepsy surgery.

Goals - Breakout sessions of small groups to discuss specific cases and more details about what was covered on Friday. The moderators can assign presentations and discuss format of the session.

Each person will choose 2 groups (cannot choose the same 1 twice). Sessions will run from

08:30-10:15 and 10:30-12:15.

Sessions with run concurrently with MSET meeting.

Breakout session groups:

1.

Challenging adult and pediatric epilepsy cases

Participants will bring challenging cases to discuss and review with epileptologists.

Moderators: Marianna Spanaki-Varelas, Bob Simkins, Jules Constantinou

(Possibly guest lecturers)

2. Epilepsy surgery special interest group

Will focus on the role of epilepsy surgery, newer techniques, and outcomes.

Moderators: Jason Schwalb, Ellen Air, Vibhangini S. Wasade

3. Status epilepticus and critical care monitoring

Will discuss management of SE and role of cEEG.

Moderators: Panayiotis N. Varelas, Mohammed Rehman, Other (?)

4. Neuroimaging, advanced neuroimaging, and MEG in epilepsy.

Will review classic neuroimaging evaluations as well as advanced techniques and MEG.

5. Mood disorders, PNES, and complementary treatments in epilepsy.

Will discuss treatment and management of comorbidities and focus on alternative treatments.
