Many of you may have heard about the link of dairy and sugar with acne. Recently, Dr. Mark Hyman, a well known Functional Medicine doctor, published an article about the connection of dairy and sugar with acne. The article contains the research findings and some great suggestions on how to treat and prevent acne. We'eve included an excerpt from the article. For a full review of the article and other information by Dr. Hyman, please reference drhyman.com By: Dr. Mark Hyman IT'S CONFIRMED. DAIRY PRODUCTS AND SUGAR CAUSE ACNE. As our sugar and dairy consumption has increased over the last 100 years so has the number of people with acne. We now have over 17 million acne sufferers, costing our health care system $1 billion a year. Eighty to ninety percent of teenagers suffer acne to varying degrees. The pimply millions rely on infomercial products hawked by celebrities or over-the-counter lotions, cleansers, and topical remedies. Recent research suggests that it's not what we slather on our skin that matters most but what we put in our mouth. Many have suggested a diet-acne link, but until recently it has not been proven in large clinical studies. Instead dermatologists prescribe long-term antibiotics and Accutane, both of which may cause long-term harmful effects. In 2009, a systematic review of 21 observational studies and six clinical trials found clear links. Two large controlled trials found that cow's milk increased both the number of people who got acne and its severity. Other large randomized prospective controlled trials (the gold standard of medical research) found that people who had higher sugar intake and a high glycemic load diet (more bread, rice, cereal, pasta, sugar, and flour products of all kinds) had significantly more acne. The good news is that chocolate (dark chocolate that is) didn't seem to cause acne. The dietary pimple producing culprits-diary and sugar (in all its blood sugar raising forms)-both cause spikes in certain pimple producing hormones. Dairy boosts male sex hormones (various forms of testosterone or androgens) and increases insulin levels just as foods that quickly raise blood sugar (sugar and starchy carbs) spike insulin. Androgens and insulin both stimulate your skin to make those nasty, embarrassing pimples. One patient recently told me he would give a million dollars for a pill to cure acne. He doesn't need to. It seems that for many the cure to acne is at the end of their fork, not in a prescription pad. While pimples are not as simple as too much milk or sugar in your diet, both have a significant impact. Nutritional deficiencies as well as excesses can worsen acne. Correcting common deficiencies including low levels of healthy omega-3 anti-inflammatory fats, low levels of antioxidants such as vitamin E, zinc, and vitamin A, and including an important anti-inflammatory omega-6 fat called evening primrose oil all may be helpful in preventing and treating unwanted pimples. I will explain how you can correct and incorporate all of these nutritional elements of your diet and outlines some supplements that will help you fight acne in a moment. Keep in mind, the radiation risks, according to recent statement by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, are low. To protect your thyroid, potassium iodide is recommended. The CDC has a very good explanation, dosing suggestions, and cautions at: http://emergency.cdc.gov/radiation/ki.asp. One dose should provide protection for one day. The reason this works is that potassium iodide provides enough iodine for your thyroid so that the thyroid will be inhibited from taking up any radioactive iodine. It is apparent that the plants and nutrients regularly suggested for antioxidant support are the same ones found to have radioprotective properties. Because most studies are animal based, dosing is unavailable. A good idea is to enrich your diet with antioxidant foods on a regular basis. About miso soup. Naomi Brownsen LAc recently related a story about doctors treating patients after Hiroshima nuclear bomb explosion. The doctors who ate miso soup daily had lower cancer rates than those who didn't. A study suggests protective effects from miso (Hiroshima J Med Sci. 2001 Dec;50(4):83-6). Eating miso soup daily sounds like a good idea. Miso Soup recipe. Miso soup is relatively easy to prepare. To prepare, you can add kelp ( a source of iodine), and tofu, a vegetarian protein). Miso can be obtained from the refrigerated section of the grocery store. For 4 servings: · 4 cups water · 3 tablespoons miso paste (available in yellow, white or red), the longer fermented, the better. · 1 package silken tofu, diced · 1 scallion or green onion, sliced to ½ inch pieces · Kelp (dried seaweed), crumbled or chopped. Alternatively, use 2.5 tsp dashi, a combination of kelp and dried fish (bonito). Heat 4 cups water to boiling, if using dashi, add now. Turn down heat to medium and stir in miso paste until dissolved. Place tofu and onion in soup. Gently heat for 2-3 minutes prior to eating. Below is a list of radioprotective plants and nutrients I found when doing a rapid PubMed search for this article. Ganoderma lucidum Reishi mushrooms. Beta carotene - One interesting study was done on children following the Chernobyl incident. Supplementing 40 mg of natural beta carotene provided in a green algae (Dunaliella bardawil) reduced oxidation markers in the blood (Hiroshima J Med Sci. 2001 Dec;50(4):83-6.) The concept here is that you can find beta carotenes in colorful fruits and vegetables. Suggested daily amount is 2.5-5 or more cups daily. Tumeric - Tumeric is one ingredient in curry powder. Eating curry will supply you with tumeric and its active ingredient, curcumin. You can also find tumeric as a over the counter supplement. · J Surg Res. 2004 Jul;120(1):127-38. · Acta Biol Hung. 2005;56(3-4):333-43 Other known antioxidants.
