Thesis Formation
TOPIC: The effect of the Cold War on Canada
In Box A write down your thesis statement.
In Box B state your 3 arguments and list the points/topics you feel you should cover in order to make that
argument.
BOX A
It is important to spend some time thinking about this one sentence that is the
nucleus of your paper. Formulation of a concise, planned thesis is imperative
as everything in your paper will support the thesis, which you will argue.
Your essay is persuasive in that you are researching material that will prove
your assertion (thesis). Use your inquiry questions and research to help you
formulate your thesis.
BOX B
Argument 1:
Points to cover:
Your thesis is a clear statement of objective – why are you writing this
paper? Ask the question and then answer it! The answer is your thesis.
HELPFUL HINT: A thesis should be one arguable point.
Argument 2:
Points to cover:
Your research then becomes a gathering of materials others have compiled to
support the point of view you have chosen for your paper.
Your thesis must be a declarative, concise, unified sentence.

Essay Problems
GENERAL
-No “I”, “Me”.
-You must cite paraphrasing(Prospero 2013)
-then, than, there, their, two, to, too
INTRODUCTION
First Sentence
-General: refer to handout
Body of the Paragraph
-topic gets more specific so that reader knows exactly what aspects of the topic you are focused
on
-In the intro paragraph, make sure to mention your 3 argument points, not necessarily in a row,
but start to build up a defence
-Last sentence –Thesis
BODY
-General statement to open paragraph
-throughout the paragraph make sure THAT YOUR MAIN ARGUMENT AND POINTS ARE
CLEARLY IDENTIFIED.
-if an argument has more than one point, just one space, if it’s a new argument, double space
Use quotes and facts to back up statements, but you must build up to the proofs, don’t just place
it after a period. Remember its an argument!
ALWAYS RESTATE YOUR THESIS(IN DIFFERENT WORDS) AT THE END OF EACH
POINT TO MAKE SURE THE READER KNOWS WHAT YOU ARE PROVING.
CONCLUSION
-specific to general
-Make sure you sum up your three points, and leave the reader with a final proof.
DO NOT SECOND GUESS YOUR ARGUMENT!!! Nothing new should be added to the
conclusion.
