An operational permit is required when more than 100 cubic feet are handled or stored (an operational permit is not required for agricultural storage). PRECAUTIONS 1. Trash and waste shall be removed daily from the structure. 2. Vegetation including grass shall not be allowed to accumulate at any point on the premises. Page 1 of 2 3. A minimum of 3 feet of clearance shall be maintained between fire sprinklers and the piles. 4. A clear separation distance equal to the height of the pile shall be maintained between storage, structures and combustible materials. Storage maximum stack is 100 tons each with a clear space of 20 feet around each (these limits do not apply to farm structures for agricultural storage. 5. An approved dust collection system is required in a building where equipment or machinery generates dust. 6. Portable fire extinguishers shall be provided as required by the fire code for extra-hazard occupancies. 7. Storage in a structure shall be in structures complying with the applicable sections fire and building codes for combustible fibers. 8. Smoking or the use of heating or other devices employing an open flame, or the use of spark-producing equipment is prohibited in areas where combustible dust is generated, stored, manufactured, processed or handled.
