Cochise College Honors Program Guidelines

Philosophy:

The Honors program fosters academic relationships and allows honors students and faculty individualized opportunities for scholarship, leadership and creativity.

Eligibility:

Students eligible for honors must have a 3.5 overall G.P.A and 12 college credits completed . Students may complete a single honors project or course or they may complete our

16-unit Honors Certificate.

Getting Started:

Choose which type of honors opportunity best suits your situation from options 1 or 2 below:

1.

GENED courses taken for honors (a.k.a. “H” contracts)

This is a great way to get started in honors

Entails honors projects/curriculum completed within traditional GENED classes

Available in most disciplines; Sample GENED Honors Proposals available

Curriculum may be designed individually for single or multiple students or as a group project within a specific course

Faculty submit GENED Honors Proposal for review by the Honors Committee

Faculty submit grades for honors students in GENED classes in the traditional manner (then notify Jenn Wantz/Mary B. Coyle via email)

 Completion of form necessary to process faculty stipends

NO tuition waiver/reimbursement available

Faculty interested in mentoring students for honors within traditional GENED courses need to submit a GENED Honors Proposal detailing their honors curriculum which will be reviewed by the Honors Committee. Sample approved GENED Honors Proposals are available upon contacting Honors Program Chair, Mary B. Coyle at coylem@cochise.edu

. Once this courselevel honors curriculum is approved by the Committee, the process need not be repeated . Faculty are asked to attend the Honors Committee meeting during which their curriculum proposals will be reviewed in order to answer questions and provide additional information if necessary.

Subsequent honors students in future semesters may complete the approved honors curriculum within that GENED course with that faculty member without further need for Honors Committee approval. Honors faculty need only direct honors students to submit an electronic copy of their unofficial Cochise College transcripts to Jenn Wantz, Honors Program Secretary/Treasurer at wantzj@cochise.edu

; this will satisfy the FERPA disclosure policies. Once approved, the student(s) may complete the respective course(s) for honors credit. Faculty submit grades for these honors students in the traditional way then forward to Jenn and Mary the names and C-

Numbers of all the honors students who have successfully passed the course (C or above) and who have completed the honors curriculum as proposed. We will forward these names to the

Registrar, and students’ transcripts will be amended to include "taken for honors" for the course(s).

OR

2. HON 250 Individual Honors Project

1-4 variable units (beyond regular coursework)

May be multi-disciplinary

Submission/approval of Honors Contract required (see www.cochise.edu/honors )

Tuition scholarship/reimbursement upon eligibility verification

Students completing HON 250 Individual Honors Projects need to submit a formal Honors

Contract detailing the proposed project which will be reviewed by the Honors Committee. This contract should be created in conjunction with a faculty mentor. This is a dynamic process in which students may seek out mentors and propose project ideas and/or mentors may approach eligible students about honors opportunities and project ideas. Each HON 250 project is meant to be an individualized learning experience for the student under the guidance of a mentor in that field(s). Projects combining scholarship, leadership, and creativity are strongly encouraged.

Generally, students and/or their faculty mentors are expected to attend the Honors Committee meeting during which their contract will be reviewed in order to answer questions or provide additional information. The Honors chair will later notify the students and mentors of the

Committee’s decision. A user-friendly Honors Contract can be accessed from the Honors webpage and filled out electronically at www.cochise.edu/honors . Please scan signed copies and return electronically with unofficial transcript to Mary B. Coyle and Jenn Wantz. Samples of approved HON 250 Contracts are available upon request. Jenn will process all forms for faculty mentoring HON 250 projects and will forward them to Michele Helm for stipend approval by the

VPI. Faculty submit grades for HON 250 directly to Mary B. Coyle for the Sierra Vista Campus and outlying campuses/centers and to Dave Pettes for the Douglas Campus (please copy Jenn

Wantz).

3. HON-prefixed courses:

Courses in various disciplines taught or team-taught by honors faculty

A limited number of Honors courses are offered (see Schedule of Classes)

Interested faculty should consult with the Honors chair

Students submit unofficial electronic transcripts and fill out a special Honors course registration form (available at www.cochise.edu/honors ). Both are submitted to Jenn Wantz for approval.

Tuition scholarship/reimbursement upon eligibility verification for enrollees

After verification and drop/add are completed, eligible honors students registered in HONprefixed classes then receive a tuition scholarship. Jenn will process the LOA’s for faculty teaching all HON-prefixed courses other than HON 250, which she will then forward to the appropriate dean/administrative assistance for signature. Low-enrolled courses may be subject to prorating. Jenn will also take care of book orders. Faculty submit grades in the traditional manner.

Please do not hesitate to contact or Mary B. Coyle, Honors Chair at coylem@cochise.edu or Jenn Wantz, Honors

Secretary/Ttreasurer at wantzj@cochise.edu if you have any questions or need assistance with the forms/contracts/proposals. Thank you for joining the honors faculty—Honors opportunities truly change lives!
