Department: Division of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, College of Pharmacy in conjunction with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Position: Antimicrobial Drug Discovery Rank: Associate or Full Professor Description: The Division of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, College of Pharmacy (pharmacy.osu.edu/about/medicinal-chemistry-pharmacognosy) in conjunction with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (chemistry.osu.edu) at The Ohio State University (OSU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level to employ novel drug discovery approaches focused on preparing/isolating and identifying molecules as preclinical therapeutic candidates to treat drug resistant bacterial infections. This position is one of three hires in an antimicrobial discovery and optimization cluster that is part of a substantial university Discovery Themes investment to significantly enhance cutting-edge research on infectious disease detection, treatment and prevention (http://discovery.osu.edu/focusareas/infectious-diseases/). This investment builds upon existing strengths and a culture of academic collaboration to foster cross-disciplinary research with sustained global impact. The College of Pharmacy, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and the University provide a generous start-up package, state-of-the-art core facilities and instrumentation, a collaborative and collegial environment, multiple centers and programs in infectious disease research (microbiology.osu.edu, medicine.osu.edu/mii, cmib.osu.edu, phpid.osu.edu), and interdisciplinary graduate education programs. Moreover, Columbus offers diverse cultural and recreational opportunities, affordable housing, excellent schools and a variety of career opportunities. Qualifications: The successful candidate is expected to have an independent and nationally recognized research program with extramural funding. Collaboration is envisioned with the cadre of outstanding OSU investigators specializing in the study of clinically significant bacterial pathogens including Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumanni, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Synergy is also anticipated between this hire and the two other projected hires in this antimicrobial discovery and optimization cluster: an expert in systems biology to identify antimicrobial drug targets and therapeutic leads and an expert in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics focusing on the discovery of new antibacterial drugs and the optimization of existing antimicrobial drug regimens. With strategic investments through this antimicrobial discovery and optimization cluster, OSU will be uniquely positioned to respond to the White House National Strategy for Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria (https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-pressoffice/2015/01/27/fact-sheet-president-s-2016-budget-proposes-historic-investment-combat-a). Application Instructions: Applications should be submitted via email as a single PDF including a CV, a research program summary and future directions, a vision statement for this position of one page or less, and a list of three references as a single pdf file to Dr. Karl Werbovetz, search committee chair, c/o Ms. Alice Gardner 1 (gardner.1067@osu.edu). Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and will be negotiable. Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Ohio State is committed to fostering a culturally and intellectually diverse environment. Preferred qualifications of the applicant include experience mentoring members of underrepresented groups. We are responsive to dual-career families and strongly promote work-life balance to support our community members. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, or protected veteran status. 2
