Mathias Schjoelberg ENG 302 Professor Webb 10.23.2013 Scenario Sequence 2 The Physical “Jennifer is nineteen-years old and has won three local beauty pageant competitions in her hometown of San Antonio over the last three years. Her friends have encouraged her to enter into the Texas State Pageant called The Universal Royal Beauty Pageant. Jennifer decides to enter The Universal Royal Beauty. Jennifer’s mother has supported her in entering beauty competitions. However, her mother does not want her to enter The Universal Royal Beauty Pageant in fear that she might lose it, which will lead to disappointment and then she will never enter another competition. Jennifer’s mother tells her that she will not go with her to the competition if she enters it.” (Adam Webb’s PBworks) What is The Texas State Pageant-The Universal Royal Beauty Pageant? The Texas State Pageant – The Universal Royal Beauty Pageant is a “beauty pageant that was started to be a positive learning experience for contestants to learn how to compete, gain self-confidence and strive to be the very best” (. It is for Babies, toddles and teenagers. People can enter it by emailing a photo and pay an entry fee of $195.00 as well as another $195.00 payable to Universal Royalty. A jury will pick out who gets a spot to the preliminary rounds of the beauty pageant. Questions by group: - How can her mom’s attitude affect Jennifer in the long run? Jennifer’s mother does not want Jennifer to compete in the beauty pageant because she is afraid she will do bad and get so disappointed that she never will compete in another beauty pageant again. I think there is a bigger chance she won’t compete again if her mom keeps saying stuff like this to her daughter. It is basically like saying “You’re not good or beautiful enough to compete with these girls”. This will create negative thoughts and worsen her confidence in how she looks and perform and ultimately not compete. Jennifer’s mom needs to be supportive and remind her daughter that she is a great performer, a beautiful person and has already won 3 events. No matter how she will do in the beauty pageant, she will gain experience and learn from it. Questions to consider: Should Jennifer enter into The Universal Royal Beauty Pageant? Explain why or why not. As stated on the website, the Pageant is to learn how compete, gain selfconfidence and strive to be the best. Beauty Pageants is something Jennifer has been doing for three years now and to step up a level can be positive so she can learn and get better in what she is doing. She might get disappointed if she doesn’t get the results she was hoping for, but since this is her first time in this contest, she should think she is there to learn and gain experience. How should Jennifer deal with her mother’s decision not to support her choice to enter The Universal Royal Beauty Pageant competition? Jennifer’s mother approaches this wrong. By not supporting her daughter in going because she is afraid she might not win makes me feel that she doesn’t think her daughter is good enough. Jennifer should be reminded by the three wins she have from her local beauty pageants, especially from her mother. As stated on their website, this pageant is to gain confidence, not loose it. Jennifer should tell her mom that she is there to learn, to have fun and get more experience. She is relaxed and she will not be disappointed is she doesn’t win. How could her mother’s decision not to support her in this competition affect Jennifer’s attitude toward the competition? As I said in the previous question, Jennifer mom is pretty much doing everything she can not to boost her daughters confidence. By saying she is afraid Jennifer will be so disappointed that she never will enter a tournament again is the same as saying her mother doesn’t believe in her. You wouldn’t want a nineteen year old girl believe that her mom thinks she doesn’t look as good as others. This could easily make Jennifer feel bad about her self, which can lead to worse things as well. High confidence and self-esteem is essential to be successful in life.
