St. Anthony Cathedral, Detroit
Many churches call themselves “catholic” but are not in full communion with the Catholic Church..
They do not recognize the authority of the pope and do not completely share other elements of the
Catholic faith.
There are 23 Eastern Rite Catholic Churches and one Western Rite Catholic Church
A Rite is defined by how people worship, its understanding of doctrine, its prayer and spirituality and
its canon law
The Western Rite Catholic Church is the Roman Catholic Church or Latin Rite
The Eastern Rite Catholic Churches are
Coptic; Ethiopian; Eritrean; Maronite, Syrian; Syro-Malankara; Armenian; Chaldean; Syro-Malabar;
Albanian Byzantine; Belarusian Greek; Bulgarian Greek; Byzantine Church of Croatia, Serbia and
Montenegro; Greek Byzantine Catholic; Hungarian Greek; Italo-Albanian; Macedonian Greek;
Melkite Greek; Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek Catholic; Russian Greek; Ruthenian;
Slovak Greek; Ukranian Greek. All these Eastern Rite Churches are in full communion with the
Church of Rome.
The Orthodox Church is not in communion with the Catholic Church.
