Traditional & Genetic Genealogy Workshop David McKellar Date/Time: Wednesdays 10:00 – 12:00 pm kilblaan@gmail.com January 27, 2016 (4 sessions) Location: Lafford Classroom Min: 5 Instructor: First class: Max: 10 Course Outline COURSE PREPARATION: 1 2 Each student needs to bring a laptop or tablet for each class to get the maximum benefit Before the first class each student will be required to join ancestry.ca if not already – this is FREE (you only pay if you want to search and access records etc) Before the first class you will be invited by the instructor to join an existing family tree on ancestry.ca entitled “Early Westcock Families” Instructor will work with the students before and in between all sessions on-line 3 4 COURSE OUTLINE: Week One: Ensure everyone can access the family tree “Early Westcock Families” Discussion on the utilization and features of ancestry.ca including Ancestry App How to share your tree and work collaboratively with relatives and other researchers Brief introduction of Family Tree Maker (from ancestry.ca) and features including synchronizing trees between ancestry.ca (‘cloud’) and your laptop/tablet Discuss other family history software such as Brother’s Keeper (free) and the use of the GEDCOM format to exchange family trees between applications Week Two If your family tree is not in a digital form bring key birth/marriage/death information for your ancestors Ensure all students have Introduction on the use of on-line historical maps and how to map your ancestors geographic location Week Three Continue to work on your on-line trees with instructor Brief introduction to genetic genealogy Instructor will demonstrate the results of various DNA testing that he’s done and results Instructor Bio: Born in Glasgow, Scotland … grew up in Northern Ontario … worked in Ottawa … retired in 2008. Students are requested to notify the instructor of any mobility concerns; however, the decision to participate in any course activity is the responsibility of the student.
