January 2014 Volume 1 Issue 2 SHAMAN NEWS Our Theme for 2014: I READ! I SUCCEED! A Message from Mrs. E. You’re going to be hearing a lot about our theme for 2014: “I READ! I SUCCEED!” over the next year…and I’m very excited to share all we have going on to improve the reading abilities of our students. First off, we have two brand new intervention curriculums being used in fourth through tenth grade: Language ! which specifically helps second-language learners develop vocabulary and reading skills in English; and Read 180, an engaging individualized program with a computer component and small group attention. Next, stop by and see our beautiful new library expand! We have received over $5000 in new books and a stunning circulation desk, along with a new checkout system. Books are being catalogued and organized in new student-friendly ways so everyone can easily find what interests them at their reading level. BOOK BUDDY BAGS: A NEW HOME-SCHOOL READING PROGRAM On Monday, January 14th, you will see excited students in grades K-3 bringing home a clear plastic “folder” that contains a brand new book, a reading “contract” and a small assignment packet. These are to be completed throughout the week, and then brought back on Thursdays, so a different book can be put in the folder for the following week! AR – Students in grades 3-6 will continue to read, take quizzes and earn points towards awards and prizes in the Accelerated Reader Program. Lots of other exciting events will be coming up to keep our kids reading! The VERY BEST UpComing Events 1/6 Teacher Work Day 1/7 School Resumes 1/8 BACK TO SCHOOL NITE: I Read! I Succeed!
