This will be a five paragraph analytic essay. Student will can earn up to 40 points for the final paper. Grades will also be given on various parts of the process which will equal 40 points. Therefore, it will be extremely important that your child be in attendance or make up any missed work if not in attendance. Work not made up or passed in will be a zero. INSTRUCTIONS, EXPLANATIONS, CLARIFICATIONS, etc: Analytical essays ask you to analyze, or break down and interpret information to answer a question. This is a five-paragraph essay with clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Student will be provided time in Social Studies to work on their graphic organizer and to write their rough draft. They will also have the opportunity to peer conference and edit their writing. Final drafts must be typed, double spaced, in 12pt standard font (Times New Roman), with black ink on clean paper with 1-inch margins. This week you will be writing an analytical essay that answers the following: Which three of the seven characteristics of civilization best illustrate that ancient Sumer was a civilization? (This question asks you to select three of the seven characteristics of civilization. You will describe them and provide examples from ancient Sumer. You must analyze how these examples affected the lives of the people of ancient Sumer and show that Sumer was in deed a civilization.) First class (12/8): Introduce topic, review the seven characteristics of civilization and examples of each from our text and ISN. Students will fill out a brainstorming diagram and narrow their focus to the three characteristics they will write about. (HW: finish brainstorming/Prewriting) 2. Second class (12/9): We will review what thesis statements and lead sentences are. Students will fill out the graphic organizer for the paper. (Homework: Finish graphic organizer ) 3. Third class (12/11): We will review our graphic organizers. We will also begin to write the rough draft of the intro paragraph of the essay. 4. Fourth class (12/12): We will review our rough draft of our intro paragraph. We will begin writing our first body paragraph. These paragraphs will take the most time and effort to write. You will choose which three characteristics of civilization best illustrate the fact that Sumer was a civilization. You will also need to provide supporting evidence (examples) about how these characteristics affected the lives of the people of ancient Sumer.
