Year 4 Summer 1 2015 Homework Schedule
Read it
This half term we will be reading Fly, Eagle, Fly! This is a traditional
African tale retold by the author Christopher Gregorowski and
illustrated by Niki Daly.
You should read another book or traditional tale from another culture
and compare and contrast it with Fly, Eagle, Fly! You can do this by
looking at similarities and differences between them e.g. setting,
characters and plot. Which do you prefer? Why? Explain. What value
do the illustrations add to the texts?
Practice it
Spend some time practising the skills we are learning in school:
Practise your Times tables with links:
e.g. 2x, 4x and 8x; 5x and 10x; 3x, 6x and 9x
How can knowing one time table e.g. 4x help you to know the 8x
Spelling: try to learn as many of the Y4 words as possible in your new
Reading Record book.
Research it
Make it
Research an information poster about ancient Egyptian burial practices.
How did they bury their dead? Why did they do it that way?
Make a Sumerian temple-pyramid, a ziggurat. These were purpose built
places of worship in the very first recorded human cities in
Mesopotamia (modern Iraq). They were step pyramids with shrines to
the gods at the top. (Search: Ancient Sumer, Mesopotamia, Ziggurat)
Imagine that you are an expert, an Egyptologist, so prepare your
information as an attractive poster that will help you to present your
findings to the rest of the class.

Write it
The story of Fly, Eagle, Fly! makes us think that we can achieve much
more than people, or we ourselves, sometimes believe we can. We don’t
have to be a chicken, we can become an eagle and achieve great things.
Write your own story which shows how people can achieve their
potential or make the most of their talents. Like in Fly, Eagle, Fly! use
animals to show how this can be done and support your story with
pictures.
Think about what the ziggurat looks like, what kind of materials you
can use to construct it e.g. cardboard, paper, papier-mâché, boxes,
wood, etc. What colours do you think it would be? What would the
temple/shrine look like at the top?
Design it
The Ancient Sumerians and Egyptians loved to play board games!
Design your own board game which uses the patterns that link and
connect times tables:
e.g. 2x, 4x and 8x tables, or the 3x and 6x tables, etc.
How will know your move? Dice? Coloured sticks? A spinner? How
does the game start? How does it end? How do you move around the
board? Will it need squares? Circles? Use your imagination!
A note to parents,
Over the course of this half term please work with your child to complete the above. Each of the activities has been designed to support, enhance and enrich an aspect of the curriculum. We are looking forward to seeing the
results of your work together.
In addition, we will be looking for every child to read at home with their parents every evening.
Listening to children read will enable them to grow in confidence as they become fluent readers. Once children are able to read fluently and with expression, discussion around their comprehension of the texts will be
equally beneficial.
We are all very grateful for your support.
