SOUTH WEST DOCTORAL TRAINING CENTRE
ACADEMIC LED COLLABORATION Funding Application
The purpose of the funding is to develop and foster collaboration and to develop collaborative opportunities
for students. Academic led external collaborations will be supported, if approved by the SWDTC Academic
Advisory Board (AAB), where joint activities can be developed across disciplines, across institutions and with
organisations outside the SWDTC network.
What Can I Request Funding For?
This is an open funding programme and reasonable costs related to the proposed collaborative activity will
be considered for funding. It is important that links to the SWDTC’s collaboration priorities are explicit, and
that a budget is submitted with the application form. In cases where collaboration requires the financial
support of the international attendees then costs for travel, subsistence and accommodation will be
considered but no fees or salary costs would be covered.
What Type of Collaboration?
ESRC and the SWDTC seek to fund collaborations between social scientists and organisations in the
private, public and civic society sectors, to increase our research impact on policy and practice, and also to
encourage collaborative mind-sets and ways of working. We take a broad interpretation of collaboration,
ranging from large innovative programmes to smaller bespoke activities, events and networks. Successful
funding applications will explore the breadth of collaborative possibilities, and also the short, medium and
longer-term impact of their activities. You will also be expected to support the SWDTC to use your
collaboration as a case or impact study, or as part of other promotions of the work of the SWDTC.
Examples of collaboration activities may be found on the ESRC website at:
http://www.esrc.ac.uk/collaboration/
Eligibility
Academics from the SWDTC partners (Bath, Bristol and Exeter) are eligible to apply for scoping and/or
programme funds. The amounts which may be applied for are (up to) £300 and £5k, as follows:

Sums of up to £300 could be requested to fund the meetings and activities associated with scoping
and shaping external collaborations;

Sums of up to £5,000 could be requested for programme(s) of external collaboration, including
reasonable T&S costs, internships, pathway shared seminar series, workshops, or to bring national
or international experts together with SWDTC students for formal collaborations.
Applications should ideally be collaborative across the SWDTC consortium i.e. academics should liaise with
others at partner institutions within the SWDTC (Bath, Bristol and Exeter).
Academics must lead the activity in shaping the proposed plan and business case, but there also must be
clear involvement from students at appropriate stages.
Pathway leads must be informed of any application.
It is strongly recommended that you speak to Molly Conisbee, Collaboration Facilitator, before submitting
your application: Molly.conisbee@bristol.ac.uk
