The Coast Guards role during the Korean War was marginal and mainly a support role. Coast Guard cutters saw action during operation “Market Time” during the Vietnam War; Ocean going cutters augmented the Navy. During Operation Desert Storm Coast Guard strike teams were NOT placed solely in charge of oil cleanup. The federal Life Saving Service began to take shape in 1848. The Coast Guards ENVIROMENTAL PROTECTION mission was started in 1822 when congress created a timber reserve for the Navy. The refuse act of 1899 started the Coast Guards mission to protect waterways from pollution. Drug interception became a major focal point in the 1970’s 1794 cutters are charged with preventing more slaves from being brought into the country. The sinking of the Titanic started the international ice patrol. Marcus Hanna was awarded a medal Of honor during the civil war and later was awarded a Gold life saving medal. The SPARS were formed Nov 23 1942 After WW2 Aux were given ratings, ranks and uniforms. In 1918 twin sisters Genevieve and Lucille Baker become 1st uniformed women to serve in the CG. 1945 the 1st five African-American women enter the SPARS Olivia Hooker. 1958 YNCM Jack Kerwin Becomes the 1st CG E-9 1959 Alex Haley retires as a Chief Journalist, the journalist rate was created because of him. 1969 BMCM Charles Calhoun is instated as the 1st CG E-10. 1973 Women are integrated into Active duty and the reserves. 1978 All jobs in CG are opened to women. 1987 BMCM Donald Horsley retires after serving 44 yrs 4 months and 27 days, serving on 34 vsls. The original 10 cutters that made up the RCS were Vigilant, Active, General Green, Massachusetts, Scammel, Argus, Diligence, South Caroline, Virginia and Eagle. 1915 RCS and LSS merge to form CG.
