Weighted mark reckoner
Instructions for calculating overall weighted mean mark for single stage programmes (i.e. PGT programmes, Direct Entry to year 3 of a BEng)

Click on the ‘Single Stage or PGT programme’ tab

Enter the following marks and credit values: o Direct entry to year 3 of a Bachelor’s degree: enter year 3 marks and credit values o PGT programmes: enter marks and credit values for taught modules and dissertation
Instructions for calculating stage 2, stage 3 and overall weighted mean marks for two stage programmes (Bachelor’s, UG Masters, Direct Entry to year 2 of a UG Masters or Bachelor’s degree,)

Click on the ‘Two stage programme’ tab

For a two stage Bachelor’s programme, ensure that DE2-BEng is selected (it should default to this value). The following values should display: o Stage 2 Weighting = 25%; Stage 3 Weighting = 75% o Stage 2 Weighting Multiplier = 1; Stage 3 Weighting Multiplier = 3

For a two stage UG Masters programme, select DE2-MEng from the drop-down list (you will need to click in the cell which displays default value of DE2-BEng for the drop-down list to appear). The following values should display: o Stage 2 Weighting = 20%; Stage 3 Weighting = 80% o Stage 2 Weighting Multiplier = 1; Stage 3 Weighting Multiplier = 2

Enter marks and credit values for each year 2 module into Stage 2

Enter the following marks and credit values into Stage 3: o Bachelors: enter year 3 marks and credit values o UG Masters: enter year 3 and year 4 marks and credit values


Click on the ‘Two stage programme’ tab

Select DE3-MEng from the drop-down list (you will need to click in the cell which displays default value of DE2-BEng for the drop-down list to appear). The following values should display: o Stage 2 Weighting = 0%; Stage 3 Weighting = 100% o Stage 2 Weighting Multiplier = 0; Stage 3 Weighting Multiplier = 2.5

Enter marks and credit values for year 3 and year 4 modules into Stage 3

The Stage 3 Weighted Average mark will be the Overall Weighted Average mark
The DMC (Distribution of Module Classes) fields will automatically update as marks and credit values are entered, converting credits to units and allocating them to the appropriate degree classification bands. However, these values should only be used if a student’s overall weighted mean mark is in a borderline range as follows:

>= 67.0 and < 69.5 – for consideration for a 1 st
>= 57.0 and < 59.5 – for consideration for a 2:1
>= 48.0 and < 49.5 – for consideration for a 2:2
>= 38.0 and < 39.5 – for consideration for a 3 rd
The weighted mark reckoner does not identify students whose weighted mean mark is in a borderline range. If you are using the weighted mark reckoner and are unsure what degree classification should be awarded, please contact Taught Student Administration or consult Section
