LEARNING—FOCUS STRATEGIES
JMMS Lesson Planning Form
Teacher(s)

Grade Level
7
Subject/Concept
Life Science-Cells
Standards
S7L2. Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and
organ systems.
a. Explain that cells take in nutrients in order to grow and divide and to make needed
materials.
b. Relate cell structures (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts,
mitochondria) to basic cell functions.
c. Explain that cells are organized into tissues, tissues into organs, organs into
systems, and systems into organisms.
d. Explain that tissues, organs, and organ systems serve the needs cells have for
oxygen, food, and waste removal.
e. Explain the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body (i.e., digestion,
respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, movement, control, and
coordination, and for protection from disease).

Teaching Strategies
Include Thinking Map(s)
Include Guided Practice
What are cells? What are the main types of cells? What are the characteristics of ALL cells?
How do prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells compare? How do plant and animal cells compare?
What are the major organelles and their functions? How can the cell be compared to a
factory, school, city, mall, or farm?
Share pairs, Individual and Group Brainstorms, Show what you know, Coach
questions, teacher-made quick reviews, wordsplash, quick write, etc
Discussion, Cornell Notes from PowerPoint, Guided Reading from textbook and
CRCT Coach book, Graphic Organizers, Web Activities, handouts(edhelper, CPO,

Accommodations
with student initials
Make a Wordsplash (wordsplash.com) of some of the most important vocabulary
words. Guided reading, brainpop, Ticket out the door, 3-2-1,
Students will write paragraphs using vocabulary, Compare and contrastDouble Bubbles, Cell Project-Students will build a factory, school, mall, or
farm as a cell; relating the functions of the organelles to the functions of the
parts of the factory, etc.
