Future Leaders Institute (FLI) Charter School Grade 5/6 Social Studies Teacher AVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY General Information Beginning as the brainchild of teachers, Future Leaders Institute is a K-8 charter school that empowers our students to be tomorrow’s leaders. Students in Grades 1-8 attend school from 8:20 AM to 4:55 PM Monday through Thursday and until 3:00 PM on Friday, as well as for three weeks during the summer. FLI’s schedule allows all students to receive intensive reading, math, writing and science instruction each day, as well as truly enriching activities in the performing and visual arts and athletics. FLI is located in Harlem and has a deep commitment to the professional development of teachers. Several FLI teachers have been filmed for professional development videos that have been sold nationwide, and our classrooms have been used as lab sites for model teaching. Additionally, FLI works with professional development organizations at the Teachers College Writing Project, Mathematics in the City at City College, and has literacy, math and science staff developers for on-site training. Some things that you ought to know in advance: FLI teachers put in long hours for planning, afterschool meetings and professional development. We see teaching as social action. We expect teachers to work closely with staff developers to hone their craft – this work may involve extensive reflection and critical feedback. All teachers are expected to work three weeks in the summer (for additional compensation). We expect teachers to reach out to parents, especially with regards to discipline. Teachers may be responsible for lunch and recess duty. Still it is a school: Founded by teachers, where teachers are valued. Chosen by families (rather than one to which they have been assigned). With a diverse, committed staff. Which organizes resources for intensive and effective professional development. With a proven track record of success, that is one of the highest performing schools in Harlem That values the whole child. That provides its students with high-quality enrichment opportunities including out of state field trips, top of the line arts instruction. Where teachers get all the resources they need.
