Introduction to ECE Department

Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Power and Water University of Technology) was founded in 1967. Presently, it consists of three departments, including Power Engineering, Computer and Electronics Engineering, and

Control and Instrumentation Engineering. 45 faculty members along with 31 expert technicians support the activities of the departments. Most of faculty members are specialist in research activities related to power, control, computer and electrical engineering fields (with a more focus on power and water industries) and also offers many long-term and short-term related courses.

The specialized research activities of the faculty, contribute to the high quality and the reputation of its undergraduate and graduate programs, and improve the success of the graduates. Currently, the faculty has 305 undergraduate and 92 graduate students that study in different fields of study. The faculty includes many laboratories and workshops (as listed in the following), and a research center related to power engineering, computer, electronics, communications, and control engineering, some of those are unique among other universities in the country. Introduction to Long Term Curriculums Offered by ECE Department

Right now the ECE Department is offering degrees in three levels: BS, MS and

PhD. The list of curriculums are as follows.

1.

Graduate Degrees

PhD in Electrical Engineering

This is the highest level of electrical engineering which is degree granted by the

ECE Department. It includes a collection of research activities in electronics, bioelectric, digital systems, power, communications, control and systems. The main scientific core of this level based on the topics are theoretical, empirical or a mixture of both, while training is a tool to reform the cognitive deficiencies of the students and make it easier for them to study. The purpose of this curriculum is at least one of the ones bellow:

- mastering important scientific fields in a specific topic of electrical engineering

- mastering the latest research methods and devoting effort for innovation in this fields

- mastering one or more items such as education, research, planning, performance, management, observation, evaluation, analysis and solving scientific problems in electrical engineering fields

MS in Electrical Engineering – restructuring

This curriculum contains theoretical courses and research activities on different electrical power fields. The purpose of this curriculum is training students so that they can suitably answer the society needs by studying planning, management, operating, designing, application on projects in electricity generation, transmission, distribution and installation. The graduated students, other than teaching in research institutions and universities, can work in research organizations or organizations responsible for industrial plans and domestic industrial goods. Te maximum of this curriculum is three half years

(semesters), i.e. the students who are not obliged to take compensatory units, if they study well can finish their education in three half years. The system of the curriculum is based on credits and each theoretical credit contains 16 hours

teaching. The maximum duration of this curriculum is 5 half years. In special situations, however, we can increase the length to 6 half years.

MS in Electrical Engineering – control

This curriculum comprises of theoretical courses and research activities on systems and controls fields. The purpose of this curriculum is training students who can grant the country needs on planning activities and analysis of systems and control systems. The graduated students other than teaching in research institutions and universities can work in research organizations or organizations responsible for industrial plans and domestic industrial goods. Te maximum of this curriculum is three half years, i.e. the students who are not obliged to take compensatory units, if they study well can finish their education in three half years. The system of the curriculum is based on credits and each theoretical credit contains 16 hours teaching.

MS in Electrical Engineering – power

This curriculum consists of four majors as bellow: o Power electronics and electrical machines

This curriculum comprise of theoretical courses and research activities on electrical power fields. The purpose of this curriculum is training students who can grant the country needs by planning, management, operating, designing, application on projects in electricity generation, transmission, distribution and installation. o Power systems protection

This curriculum comprise of theoretical courses and research activities. The purpose is to train engineers who can grant the country needs for electrical engineering. The graduated students other than teaching in research institutions and universities can work in research organizations and organizations responsible for industrial plans and domestic industries. The maximum of this curriculum is two years which means 4 half years. In special situations, however, with permission of education committee we can increase the length.

Though, the duration must not be more than 2.5 years. o Power systems management and control

This curriculum is for training planning and operation experts in management and control networks and national and regional dispatching centers in the new structure of power systems in our country within a 2 year program. Training experts, to fill the gap for electricity management organization of Iran (Tavanir) throughout the country, is intended. o Power systems engineering

The students will acquire the ability to research on generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy. The research topics of this field can be: planning, operation, equipments and systems protection, insulation design and coordination, transient phenomena study, dynamics and reliability of electric energy networks with concentrated and distributed generation.

Graduated students can other than teaching in research institutions and universities, can work in private research organizations or state ones and the organization responsible for industrial programs in a vast field which are faced with power electric issues. The chosen duration is 3 half years, i.e. the students who are not obliged to take compensatory courses, if study enough can finish it in three half years. The education system is based on units and each theoretical credit is 16 hours. The maximum duration is 4 half years.

2.

Undergraduate Degrees

PWUT offers BS degrees in electrical and computer engineering as well. The quality of offered units in this university is in a way that almost half of the previously graduated students could pass the MS entrance examination towards the higher educational degrees. BS (BEng) in Electrical and Computer

Engineering includes three majors:

BS in Electrical Engineering – Transmission and Distribution (T&D)

The curriculum of electrical engineering is based on practical issues, in a way that the students learn about proper operation and maintenance of electric power equipments and systems during the different scientific and theoretical courses.

After graduation they get ready to work in electric industry of the country. The average length is 4 years and lessons are based on units in 8 semesters and the system of the education is according to country master plan in scientificpractical industry. The length of each semester is entire 17 weeks and 48 hours

laboratory and 64 hours workshop activity during the semester. With respect to the mentioned curriculum the condition of the graduation is at least 6 months working in one of organizations of electrical company of Iran and giving a report article.

BS in Electrical Engineering – power-control

This is one the curriculums in technical and engineering fields and the purpose is training experts in designing and operation, supervision, management and maintenance of the systems related to this major. Therefore, the lessons are a mixture of general, basic, major and special in fields like electrical, communication, power, control, medical engineering and bioelectric. The usual length is 4 years or 8 semesters. Every semester is 17 weeks of 51 hour of practical, laboratorial and main and workshop and special lessons and 100 hours interning. Also, for the units else than general ones, it is legal to hold class up to one fourth of the units.

BS in Computer Engineering - Hardware

This is one the academic curriculums in the field of technical and engineering and the purpose is training experts who are able to work in designing, creating and installing new hardware systems and knowing the current hardware systems and giving methods for operation, maintenance, diagnosis, and development.

The graduated students can be a member of design, creation or installation of hardware systems for different operational and service giving agencies. The length of this curriculum is 4 years and 8 semesters are set. The length of each semester is 18 entire educational weeks and 17 hours if theoretical, practical and laboratorial units are offered and 51 hours of workshop and the interning is 2 working months.
