Systematic & Engaging Early Literacy O Oats Goal: Students will copy the letter O from a model. Target Words: oats, oatmeal, open, over, oh, only Materials and Preparation: Quick oats O worksheet––1 for each student Basic materials: pencils or crayons, glue, paper Introduce: Show students the oats. Say, “Who knows what these are? These are oats. Sometimes we use oats to make oatmeal. Today we are going to make the oats into O shapes! It will be fun to make Os with our oats!” Playful Practice: Give each student an O worksheet and a scoop of uncooked quick oats. First, have students make the letter O by putting their oats on top of the Os on the worksheet. Next, have students make their own oat Os by making their oats into O shapes on the O worksheet lines. Give students each a pencil or crayon and have them trace around the outside circle of their oats. Provide assistance as necessary. After students have traced their Os, move the oats off the paper to reveal the Os they wrote. Spread glue over the Os on the O worksheet and have students sprinkle oats on top so they will stick to the paper (optional). Optional: Continue the activity by making some of the oats into oatmeal. Mix the oats with water and microwave the mixture. Let the students manipulate the oatmeal into O shapes. Example phrases to use during Playful Practice: We can make an O with our oats! Open the can to find the oats! Only oats over the O. Oh wow! You used all of your oats to make Os! Will you make a little oat O or a big oat O? Review the Playful Experience: Discuss the playful practice activity with the students. Ask students which letter they made with their oats. Show students a letter O, and have them draw the letter in the air with their finger. Have students stand in a circle with their letter O worksheets. March around the circle together chanting, “Go, go, around with O.” 1 BYU David O.
