Pre-Surgery Instructions
The Night before Surgery
Your pet is not allowed to have food after 9 PM the night before Surgery. They can have
water until your bring them to our Clinic for their procedure.
The Morning of Surgery
We ask that your pet be at the Clinic between 8 and 9 AM the morning of the Surgery.
Please give yourself time enough to come into one of our Examination rooms and speak to one
of our Technicians about your pets Surgery.
Surgery
We highly suggest doing pre-anesthetic bloodwork on any pet that is undergoing
Surgery. This bloodwork will show us whether your pet’s body and organs will be able to
handle the Anesthetic. Your pet will be hooked up to our Vital Scan Monitoring System during
their Surgery as well as having one of our Technicians or Assistants there throughout the entire
Surgery to monitor. The Vital Scan Monitoring System monitors the Heart Rate, the
Oxygenation of the Blood, the Respiratory Rate, Temperature, and Blood Pressure. Most
Surgeries require us to shave the fur of the area where the incision will be made.
Post-Surgery
After the procedure we will place your pet in the recovery area of our Hospital to be
monitored. They are given an injection for pain and also an antibiotic injection when the
Surgery is finished. The Technician or Assistant that monitored throughout the Surgery will call
as soon as your pet wakes up. If you become worried throughout the day please call and check
on the progress of your pet!
Time to Go Home!
Our policy with routine Surgeries, such as Spays or Neuters, is that your pet spends the
night at our Clinic so that our team can continue to monitor them. Teeth Cleanings are usually
sent home the night of the procedure unless the Veterinarian doesn’t feel comfortable letting
them leave that evening. Felines having Declaw Surgery will spend two nights with us. When
they are sent home they will need to have a special litter for at least 10 days to assure proper
healing. You are able to pick up your pet after 9:30 am on the day they are released. If you
have any questions or concerns at that point we will be more than happy to answer them.
At Home Care
With our routine Spay Surgeries we will send your pet home with sutures that will need
to be removed in 10 days. Although we use absorbable sutures on the inside, we use nonabsorbable sutures on the outside. We do this because pets tend not to have a reaction to the
non-absorbable sutures. Depending on the Surgery your pet may go home on Pain and
Inflammation medication and/or Antibiotics. These medications can only be given if your pet is
eating and drinking. If they stop eating and drinking please contact us immediately. After every
procedure we suggest watching the incision site. Watch for any redness, swelling, or discharge.
If you see any of this please contact us at the Clinic and we will get you and your pet in for a
quick recheck to make sure everything is healing well.
