Grades 4-6 Station 1 1N9 – Teacher Copy Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites Activity 1 Materials Needed: One set of cards per group of students Students will play the memory game: choose 3 cards in order to create a match. Each group should have a Fraction Sheet showing the matchups. Grades 4-6 Station 2 2N5 – Teacher Copy Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites Activity 1 Materials Needed: Fraction cut outs Students cut out the numbers and fractions to create a number line across the top of their desk. Underneath each fraction they will place the corresponding colored circle fractions. Activity 2 Materials Needed: Fraction cut outs Using the number line created in Activity 1, students will cut out the new fractions to add to the number line. Some fractions are equal to ones already shown. They are to be placed on top of the equivalent fraction. Grades 4-6 Station 3 3N2d – Teacher Copy Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites Activity 1 Materials Needed: Base Ten Blocks Students will use the base ten blocks to show different whole numbers and decimals. Grades 4-6 Station 4 3N5 – Teacher Copy Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites Activity 1 Materials Needed: Access to the Internet http://www.visualfractions.com/IdentifyCircles/identifycircles.html Students will enter the fractions shown. Activity 2 Materials Needed: Access to the Internet http://www.visualfractions.com/MixedCircles/imixedcircles.html Students will enter the mixed numbers shown. Grades 4-6 Station 5 3N6(1) – Teacher Copy Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites Activity 1 Materials Needed: Number line handout, calculator Students will place the correct fractions beneath their corresponding decimal equivalent. Activity 2 Materials Needed: Number line handouts, calculator Students will place the correct mixed numbers beneath their corresponding decimal equivalent. Grades 4-6 Station 6 3N6(2) – Teacher Copy Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites Activity 1 Materials Needed: Fraction Wall Using their fraction wall, students will compare several fractions to ½ using inequalities (<, >, or =). Activity 2 – Station 6 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 3N6(2) Materials Needed: Fraction Wall Using their fraction wall, students will create 10 inequality problems and an answer key. Students will exchange papers and grade. Grades 4-6 Station 7 3N6 – Teacher Copy Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites Activity 1 Materials Needed: Fraction wall, colored pencils Students will create a number line using a fraction wall. Each row on the fraction wall will be colored a different color that corresponds to the same fractions on the number line. Grades 4-6 Station 8 3N7 – Teacher Copy Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites Activity 1 Materials Needed: Deck of cards with the face cards removed, a calculator Students will place a card on the template. This creates a fraction. Students are to write the fraction, sketch a picture of the fraction, and write the decimal equivalent. Students may use calculators to check the decimal. Activity 1 Station 1 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 1N9 Place the cards face down on the table in front of you. Each player flips 3 cards. If a player has a match, they keep the cards and receive another turn. If the player does not have a match, it is the other player’s turn. 1 2 one-half 1 3 one-third 1 4 one-fourth Activity 1 - Station 2 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 2N5 You are going to create a visual number line. Use the small number line as a guide. Cut out the larger numbers and fractions. Place the 0 on the left of your desk, place the fractions in order, and the 1 on the right of your desk. This should give you a lot of space. Place the fraction circles underneath their corresponding fraction. This is a visual number line showing the fractions in order from least to greatest. 0 0 1 8 1 6 1 1 1 1 1 2 3 5 7 8 6 4 3 2 3 4 6 8 1 4 1 3 1 2 2 3 1 3 4 5 6 7 8 Activity 2 – Station 2 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 1 2N5 Place the fractions below on the number line you created in Activity 1. If the amount of colored space is the same, place these cards on top of other cards that are equal. (Add in 2/4, 2/6, 3/6, 4/6, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8) 2 4 2 6 3 6 4 6 2 8 3 8 4 8 5 8 6 8 Activity 1 – Station 3 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 3N2d Using the Base Ten Blocks, create the following numbers and decimals. Draw a picture of the blocks next to each number. Ten blocks connected together represents 1 whole. Each separated piece represents 1/10. 1) 5.2 2) 1.6 3) 2.5 4) 3 5) 1.7 6) 2.9 7) 0.4 Activity 1 – Station 4 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 3N5 Go to the website http://www.visualfractions.com/IdentifyCircles/identifycircles.html Press START. Enter the fractions shown. Complete 12 problems correctly. Activity 2 Go to the website http://www.visualfractions.com/MixedCircles/imixedcircles.html Press START. Enter the mixed numbers shown. Complete 12 problems correctly. Activity 1 – Station 5 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 3N6(1) Place the fractions underneath their corresponding decimal number on the number line. Sketch a new number line that shows the fractions on your paper. 0 0.2 0.25 0.4 0.5 0.6 0.75 0.8 0 1 1 Activity 2 – Station 5 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 3N6(1) Place the mixed numbers underneath their corresponding decimal number on the number line. Sketch a new number line that shows the mixed numbers on your paper. 1 1.2 1.25 1.4 1.5 1.6 1.75 1.8 1 2 2 2 2 2.2 2.25 2.4 2.5 2.6 2.75 2.8 3 3 Activity 1 – Station 6 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 3N6(2) Using the fraction wall, compare each of the fractions to ½ using the inequalities: Greater than >, Equal to =, or Less than < 1) 3 4 1 2 2) 2 10 1 2 3) 7 12 1 2 4) 3 5 1 2 5) 2 8 1 2 6) 3 12 1 2 7) 11 12 1 2 8) 2 3 1 2 Activity 2 – Station 6 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 3N6(2) Using the fraction wall, create your own comparisons similar to Activity 1. Create an answer sheet and have your partner answer the questions. Activity 1 – Station 7 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 3N6 Color each of the rows a different color. Using the fraction wall, write in the correct fractions on the number line under the marks shown, using the corresponding color. Some marks will have more than one fraction. Write equivalent fractions underneath each other. 1 whole 1/2 1/2 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/4 1/4 1/4 1/4 1/5 1/5 1/5 1/5 1/5 Activity 1 – Station 8 Fractions & Decimals Pre-requisites 3N7 On the template below, place a card (numbered 1-10) in the rectangle. Then write the fraction, draw a picture representing the fraction, and write the decimal equivalent. The first example is shown. You may use a calculator to check the decimal. 1) If you draw a 4 then 4 10 2) 10 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 3) 0.4
