Digital Footprint Workshop – Timeline
Information for everyone: Tom, Lucy, Dick and Mary all work together for a small
training organisation. Sadly, Mary has been made redundant as the company has
had to cut back on staffing. All the staff decide to give Mary a good send off by
having a few farewell drinks together after work.
Sarah used to work with Tom in a former job, but now works with Julie lecturing at a
college. Sarah is also friends with Dick and regularly chats with him on Facebook and
Twitter.
Although Julie now works with Sarah, she also used to work with Tom and the two
were quite close.
Harry works for a teaching recruitment agency and doesn’t know anyone else in the
group, either personally or via a social network.
Pat is a student at the training organisation, studying Art.
[Optional Characters] Chris and John are also students and friends of Pat.

you.

shocked by the photos Dick puts up on
Facebook, especially the ones of your old
boss Tom drunk.
6. Info for Pat
For a laugh, you decide to look up your
teachers on Facebook to see if you can find
anything out. You find profiles for two of

miserable old Maths teacher ‘Tetchy Tom.’

9. Info for Pat
You’re meeting some friends for lunch at
the local college and check in on

you’re in need of a trim!
9a. Info for John (Optional Time Card)
You notice ‘Tetchy Tom’ your miserable
Maths teacher out on lunch and
remember the dodgy photos Pat showed
you earlier in the week. You can’t resist

Action: You tell all your student friends
about the offer and get them to come
along.

incident at lunch with a student shouting an
insult at you. When you get back you notice
a message on the answer machine. You
listen to the message and it’s from Julie,
someone who you used to work with and
were very close to. The message is very
bizarre, stating that she “hopes you enjoyed
the party, but thinks the camera has been
‘very unkind’.”
11. Info for Dick
After seeing Lucy’s check-in at the local park
on Foursquare when she was meant to be in
work you decide to wind her up a bit by
commenting on her Facebook wall “Nice to
see you had a good time in the park, lol.”
Action: Tell Lucy what you have put on her
Facebook Wall. Lucy in turn must tell all her
Facebook friend Mary what has been written
on her Wall because she will see it too…
Action: None.
12. Info for Harry
A client contacts you with a vacancy for a
senior teaching position. You decide to use
Linked-In to advertise the role and do a
search for potential candidates. You come
across two possible candidates: one has
recently been made redundant, Mary, and a
colleague of hers called Lucy. You decide to
do a social media background check and look
them up on Facebook to get a better idea of
what they’re like.
Action: None
12a. Info for Chris (Optional Time Card)
You set up a public Facebook group for your
Art course and your classmates join. Your
teacher, Julie, has set you all an assignment

include.

classmate John and you also tell your tutor,
Julie, that you have created this group too.
12b. Info for Julie (Optional Time Card)
You are really pleased that your students are
collaborating on their coursework using a
Facebook group and decide to look it up to see if
you can be of help. You notice that a couple of
students have commented that they are
struggling to find suitable images to include in
their assignments. You think you have just the
thing!
Action: You post a link to Pinterest on the
Facebook group, a site that allows people to
organize and share images on the web. Tell your
students Chris and John that you’ve done this.
14. Info for Lucy
You’re really annoyed at Dick for posting
that tactless comment on your Facebook
Wall about your stroll in the park when you
were off sick. This info has somehow got
back to your boss at work who has called
you into the office for a little chat.
13. Info for Dick
Sarah has tweeted you to ask if you can
get the tickets to see ‘Chainsaw Suicide’
at the weekend. You ring up and are
lucky enough to get the last two tickets –
you’re over the moon.
Action: You tweet Sarah telling her you
managed to get the last two tickets to go
and see the band – she will be thrilled.
15. Info for Harry
Your social media background check about
the two likely candidates for your vacancy
produces some interesting results. It turns
out that Lucy has been bunking off work in
her current job. You decide it’s better to
contact Mary for an interview instead!
Action: Tell Dick that he is a pain and you’re Action: Contact Mary via Linked-In and ask

Facebook.
16. Info for Julie
You’ve not heard back from Tom
since leaving the telephone
message and start to wonder
whether or not he’s changed his
number. You have a search for him
on Facebook, but he doesn’t
appear to be on that either.
Action: None.
17. Info for Dick
You meet up with Sarah at the weekend to
see the band ‘Chainsaw Suicide’. You have a
great time, but after the show Sarah tells
you she showed your photos on Facebook of
Tom drunk to Julie at work, who actually
knows him from a former job! On reflection,
you think you’d better remove the photos of
Tom on Facebook – you’ve already upset
Lucy at work, you don’t want to upset Tom
too.
Action: Tell your Facebook friends Lucy and
Mary that you have removed the
embarrassing photos of Tom.
18. Info for Tom
It’s your birthday this week, but not
one of your so-called friends
remembers, and it seems Julie does
not want to know you any more so
you end up stopping in on your own
and listening to your favourite heavy
metal band ‘Chainsaw Suicide’ on CD
with a takeaway 
Action: None.
