Position for Assistant Professor (Jokyo) in the Laboratory of Plant Breeding,

We are inviting applications for the position of Assistant Professor in the Laboratory of Plant Breeding,
Research Group of Applied Bioscience, Research Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University.
Please inform potential candidates of the following details on this position.

Qualifications:
(1) Applicant should have a doctoral degree.
(2) Applicant should have good research qualifications, including significant accomplishments, in rice
genetics and breeding, particularly on hybrid sterility due to cross barriers in interspecies hybrids of
rice and related species. Applicant should be highly motivated in research in terms of genetic
approaches to overcome breeding barriers in interspecies hybrids. Applicant should have the ability
to develop his/her research on an international basis.
(3) Applicant should have the ability to provide instruction in subjects related to Plant Breeding both in
Japanese and English (see Appendix 2).
(4) Applicant should be available to assume the position on the scheduled day.
(5) The assistant professor hired for this position will be eligible to apply for the Fostering/Support
Program (see Appendix 4) of the consortium of Hokkaido University, Tohoku University, and
Nagoya University. However, applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

2,000 characters in Japanese)

(6) Summary of applicant’s perspectives on education and research in the Research Faculty of
Agriculture, Hokkaido University (either around 1,200 words in English or around 2,000 characters
in Japanese)

Appendix
1. The Laboratory of Plant Breeding is a member of the Research Group of Applied Bioscience, which is also
comprised of 5 other laboratories, namely, Genetic Engineering, Applied Molecular Entomology,
Molecular Biology, Molecular Enzymology, and Molecular Ecological Chemistry.
2. The successful applicant will partly or fully give the lectures listed below, for which the Laboratory of
Plant Breeding is responsible.
(1) Subjects in the Master’s course: General Plant Breeding (in English), Seminar on Plant Breeding,
Advanced Plant Breeding, Seminar on Advanced Plant Breeding, Seminar on Agrobiology I, II, and
Study on Agrobiology I, II.
(2) Subjects in the Bachelor’s course: General Genetics, Plant Breeding I, Plant Breeding II, Introduction
to Applied Biosciences, Introduction to Biology, Laboratory Work on Applied Bioscience, Laboratory
Work on Biology, Seminar in Applied Bioscience I, II, III, IV, and Graduation Thesis.
3.
Initial term of employment is 5 years, and an additional term of employment is limited to an
additional 5 years. To qualify for a tenure position, the candidate’s performance during employment
will be evaluated.
4.
Fostering/Support Program contents
(1) The research fund for the initial two years will be subsidized by the program for two fiscal years from
the enrollment.
(2) They will receive support for the creation of a dedicated research environment and the advancement of
their research.
(3) They are obliged to study abroad for 6 months (in principle) during the fostering period, the necessary
expenses of which will be covered.
(4) Those who benefit from the fostering program will receive further support from one appointed mentor
to smoothly initiate and advance their research in the faculty to which they are appointed.
(5) In addition, special educational training programs and joint symposiums will be provided to enrich their
interdisciplinary and multicultural communication skills for their career development.
