Serenity Sul Lesson Plan Subject: Basic French Topic: Mother’s Day Unit: Family Grade: 6-8 Learning Outcome (s): Students will be able to say and write basic French vocabulary relating to Mother’s Day. Assessment: Formative: As a whole class, students will brainstorm different Mother’s Day expression and attempt to guess what they might be in French. Summative: Students will create a bilingual Mother’s Day Card, which consists of at least two sentences in French and the English translation. As Learning: The teacher will go over students rough drafts in order to show students where they made mistakes and where to make improvements. Connection to Last Lesson: Students will continue learning vocabulary that concerns family. Activating Strategies - Preparing for Learning: Ask students what holiday is coming up (Mother’s Day) and ask them for different sayings that we use on that day, give them the example of how we say Happy Mother’s Day. Then tell them what that is in French (Bonne fête des Mères). As a whole class have them brainstorm different expression that we use, have them guess what it might be in French. Acquiring Strategies – Integrating and Processing Learning: Students will be given two vocabulary sheets, which we will go over as a whole class. The teacher will first say the word and have students’ repeat back difficult words. Applying Strategies – Consolidating Learning: Students will create a Mother’s Day Card that includes both French and English. They must include who it is for and who it is from (using the family vocabulary they previously learned), at least two sentences in French (and an English translation) and the phrase Bonne fête des Mères (Happy Mother’s Day). The criteria are to be written on the board so that students can clearly see what is expected. Students are expected to create a rough draft that is then looked at by the teacher to ensure no mistakes. Visual/spatial – students plan out their Mother’s Day card in order to make them visually appealing. Learning Styles: Auditory – students hear and repeat back French vocabulary Tactile – students create Mother’s Day cards Thinking Styles: Abstract Random – students can create the cards in any order that they choose, as long as the end result has all the necessary elements. Options for Students: Students can create different messages to translate, or choose to make a poster or other artistic piece as long as it meets all the criteria and is approved by the teacher.
