The Lord of the Rings
J.R.R Tolkien,
J.R.R grew up in Birmingham England and was always interested in history and in languages. So much so
he and a three other young men made a group based on the fact they loved history and the written
word. They were a very tight group as they went to oxford and soon all four of them were drafted into
the army. Tolkien hated the war and way it had become so mechanized with tanks and planes and
artillery and gun. There wasn’t any honor in war anymore when you could kill a man without even
seeing him. Now in the Great War all three of his friends had died, and he was left as the sole remnant
and vowed to do something to remember them. Well Tolkien continued to study in oxford and married
the love of his life and school boy sweet heart, and even had son Christopher Tolkien. He became a
professor at oxford and then he began to write, he wrote The Hobbit as a tale for his kids and it was
soon published. The publishers liked it so much they insisted Tolkien write a sequel, so he started to
with the first chapter “A long expected party” eerily resembling the first chapter of the hobbit “an
unexpected party”. Now at this time Tolkien had got a group of friends, writers, and one of those was
one C.S. Louis, they met every Tuesday for some tea and talked about what they had been working on,
and let the others help them with their work. It was here that did a lot to shape the lord of the rings.
Now when Tolkien started writing it he had no idea of where he was going, he would go a little way then
come all the way back and write it from the beginning. Like a wave that gets a little further up the beach
each time but always come all the way back, this was a very unorthodox way of writing but Tolkien
made it work. From the very beginning he loved languages and this inspired him to write his own, he
made two form of Elvish, the higher form of Elvish for the high elves and the lower form for the river
and forest elves. He also gave a language to the rohirrim that resembled an old form of English more of
a Saxon tongue.
The Rohirrim are a simple people, they could be described as Vikings on horses. Tolkien had a love of
horses and even worked with them in the war and that is the last war that horses were used in battle.
Now Tolkien had an idea, that if the English had horses they would not have lost the Normandy invasion,
since they simply rode over the English, and this would have stopped a lot of the norm influence in the
culture and language. The Rohirrim depended on their horses for their very survival and it is what gave
them a hand up on enemies. The Rohirrim loved their horses so much that they would treat them better
than their own families. It is seen in their entire culture, from the horse tales on their helmets to the
horse shape on their swords.
The Gondorian’s, are a proud people ruled by their capital Minis Tirth, but were formally ruled by
Osgiliath. They are descendants of the numanor, the numanor once had a large city that was the high of
all mankind until it was destroyed and only a few escaped including Isildor. They took with them the
Palantier, or seeing stones that were beyond any power in middle earth. They came to middle earth and
set up two kingdoms, Gondor and Arnor and they built great works of stone for they were master and
nothing could destroy a wall they had made. Ruled For many years by kings and direct descendants of
Isildor until they faded and the line of stewards took over the kingdom.
The Elves are a higher race above that of humans or any other, they knowledge and skill with crafting
and swordsmanship goes beyond all others. The Noldar were their prime, far before the Numanorians
came to middle earth the Noldar were the height of heights. They had a skill unlike any other elven race
or any other. They kept to their city of gondilon until they were forced out to help their brethren but
were destroyed by the power of Morgoth and the city of gondilon burned. After the western lands were
destroyed the high elves came and settled in Lorien, and their wood elves went the wilder forest of the
world. It was then that in their height of crafting, that in erigon they forged the rings of power.
It was then that Sauron tricked the elves into making another ring, one ring to rule them all. He tore
across the land killing the free peoples of middle earth. Until on the slopes of mount doom Isildor cut off
the one ring, but he didn’t throw it away, he keep it for himself, until a while later he was ambushed by
orc’s and lost the one ring trying to swim across the river Anduin. Seven to the dwarf lord were given but
sauron soon got them all, except one that was eaten by a dragon. The nine to the kings of men were
soon corrupted and sauron had them, the only ones he never had were the three elven rings. Giladrial
had one, and Gil-galad had the other two, and he gave these to Elrond the half elf, and Cirdan master of
the gray havens.
The five wizard were sent to middle earth to help the peoples stop sauron. They were given the same
amount of power as sauron but they could not use it in case they themselves became the dark lord.
When Gandalf arrived he was given an elven ring by Cirdan in the gray havens.
