Vision Our Library and Information Centre is an integrated learning environment where all Students and Members of Staff will have access to print and electronic information resources, allowing them to integrate information into their Research, etc. Students are able to retrieve information from open repository software’s (Like Greenstone) Online Journals, Books, Audio Visual Components, newspapers, etc. To provide a welcoming environment which will inspire students to acquire new skills so that they can participate more actively in the compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE The Library Advisory Committee has been constituted to help and guide the Librarians in the following library matters. 1. To make recommendations for proper functioning of Library & Information Centre. 2. To recommend suitable budgetary provisions for the Library& Information Centre. 3. To formulate policy in relation to the development of resource for reading, reference and projects. 4. To develop a general programme of library services to suit the interest and requirement of different teaching department of the school. 5. To frame, review and approve library rules and regulations to preserve library culture in JIRS. 6. To assist/guide the Librarians in Book Selection, Physical Verification (including stock verification, weeding/ withdraw of books with the approval of CEO) Library Automation, Digital Library, Organizing Book Fairs and other library related services. LIBRARY SELECTION POLICY SELECTION OBJECTIVES The primary objective of school libraries is to implement, enrich and support the educational program of the school. In the area of materials selection, school libraries provide a wide range of materials on various levels of difficulty, with consideration for diversity and different points of view. Library materials are defined as all electronic, print, and non-print resources, excluding textbooks, used by students and teachers. Therefore, School library will: Provide materials that will enrich and support the curriculum by collaborating with instructional stakeholders and relevant data, taking into consideration the varied interests, abilities, learning needs, learning styles and maturity levels of the students served. Provide materials for teachers and students based on their needs that encourage growth in knowledge, and that helps to develop information literacy, cultural and aesthetic appreciation and ethical standards. Provide materials which reflect the broad ideas and beliefs of religious, social, political, historical, and ethnic groups and their contribution to the local, national and world heritages and cultures, thereby enabling students to develop intellectual integrity in forming sound judgments. Provide a variety of print and non-print formats to support needs-based student learning. Place principle above personal opinion and reason above prejudice in selection of materials of the highest quality in order to ensure a comprehensive collection appropriate for the users of the school library. SELECTION PROCEDURES Materials for school libraries will be selected by the professional library staff in collaboration with the Members of Staff and students. Professionally recognized reviewing periodicals, leading newspapers, standard catalogs of different publishers, Online books stores, and other selection aids will be used by the librarian and Members of Staff to guide them in their selection. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION The following general selection criteria will apply to all materials, including electronic, print, and non-print resources: 1. Library materials shall support and be consistent with the general educational goals of the state and district and the aims and objectives of the individual schools and specific courses. 2. Library materials shall meet high standards of quality in factual content, artistic and literary value, and presentation. 3. Library materials shall be appropriate for the subject area and for the age, emotional development, ability level, learning styles, and social development of students for whom materials are selected. 4. Library materials shall meet the needs and interests of students and faculty. 5. Physical format and appearance of library materials shall be suitable for their intended use. 6. Library materials shall be current and up-to-date. 7. Library materials shall be selected to help students gain an awareness of our diverse society. 8. Library materials shall be selected for their strengths rather than rejected for their weaknesses. 9. The selection of library materials on controversial issues will be directed towards maintaining a diverse collection representing various views. GIFTS Parents, organizations, Alumni, Members of Staff and Students of the school may wish to contribute funds, gifts, or mementoes to the library. JIRS welcomes such involvement; however, the gifts and mementoes must meet the established selection criteria. Collection Structure The placement of materials within the libraries is determined by several factors. The Library uses the DDC (21st Edition) (Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme devised by Melvil Dewey in 1851-1931) which divides materials by subject and sub divisions as given below: 000 Generalities (Research Methodology, TOK, ICT, Computer Science (Hardware and Software), Library Science, Journalism, Encyclopedias etc). 100 Philosophy and related disciplines (Philosophy, Political Ethics, Psychology, Yoga, Self Improvement etc) 200 - Religion 300 Social Sciences (Sociology, Economics, Education, Environmental, Political Science, Military Studies, Law, Public Administration etc) 400 - Language, Linguistics etc 500 Pure Science (Natural Science, Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Life Science, Botany, Zoology etc) 600 Technology (Industrial, Medical Sciences, Engineering, Agricultural, Home Science, Family Living, Management, Chemical Tech, Manufactures etc) 700 The Arts (Landscape Arts, Architecture, Drawings, Decorative, Paintings, Photography, Music and Performing Arts etc) 800 etc) Literature (Literatures of Languages and *(English Fiction, Children’s Fiction 900 - General Geography, History, Biography, Genealogy etc Books (Fiction) The Fiction books come under the Main Class of 800 with sub divisions of 813 and 823 and arranged according to alphabetical order of first 3 letters of Author’s surname (e.g.) Sidney Sheldon books arranged as 823/SHE. We have separate section for Children’s Fiction with collections of Tintin, Asterix, Hardy Boys, Nancy drew etc. LIBRARY SERVICES Circulation of books Regular circulation of books is provided for classes IV and above. Generally the circulation is done during the library periods, but in order to encourage better and more utilization of library resources the circulation is done on free periods of the library. Teacher’s Corner A Teacher’s corner and an Internet room is formed for giving ample seating to teachers for reference. Library Periods Each class starting from IV to XII can use Library during their Library periods and also during Substitution periods. During these periods students can issue and return the books. The students are encouraged to maintain their reading lists and to submit book reviews of the books they have read and selection of important articles from leading daily newspapers and magazines which can be displayed in the library curiosity corner. Notice/Bulletin Boards The library notice board gives information regarding new books added to the library, Curiosity corner, student book review, career, higher education and competition related information. A Bulletin board is displayed in the library provide information and instructions. New Arrivals The new arrivals list is displayed in the notice board. The new books are also displayed on New Additions display rack. The book jackets are also prominently displayed in the library. Book Reviews Good book reviews by the students and book review columns published on the newspapers are displayed. It gives a chance to the readers to understand the books. Career/Higher Education Alerts A section of the notice board is utilized for alerts on higher education and career. Information brochures of various academic institutions, advertisements etc are displayed here. Article Alert A list of new articles appeared in the magazines/periodicals and which are relevant to the students are displayed to promote the reading by students. Reference Services There is a good collection of reference books in the library in different subject areas. These books are not issued and allowed to read only in the library. Competitions To promote reading habit and library use, competitions such as surprise library quiz, book quiz, reading sessions, designing of book jackets, etc are taking place. Prizes are given to three best readers taking into consideration the overall use of library resources by the students. Every session, best library users are selected from each section and Reading Achievement Certificates are issued. Discipline Strict discipline is maintained in the library where the students will be monitored by the Librarians and the concerned Teachers. To motivate the discipline among students the librarians will observe and select good readers and disciplined students from each class, Top 10 disciplined list will be displayed in the library notice board every week. LIBRARY RULES Opening Hours The library is open every school day from 08:00 a.m. to 02:00 p.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. Issue of Books Each student can borrow maximum 2 books against Library borrower’s card for 7 days and it can be renewed. The Members of Staff can borrow maximum 6 books for 15 days which can be renewed for next 15 days. Reservation is also available. These books are issued through Athenium Light Library Management Software. Reference Books Reference books like encyclopedias and dictionaries will not be issued. These can be referred in the library during the library periods. However, for the purpose of project work and special assignments, the students may get these books issued on request from the teacher concerned. Magazines/Periodicals Latest issues of the magazines will not be issued. The old issue of magazines and periodicals can be issued. Material should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation. 2. Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not be prescribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval. 3. Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibilities to provide information and enlightenment. 4. Libraries should cooperate with all persons and groups concerned with resisting abridgment of free expression and free access to ideas. 5. A person's right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views. 6. Libraries which make exhibit spaces and meeting rooms available to the public they serve should make such facilities available on an equitable basis, regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of individuals or groups requesting their use.
