15 May 2015 MEDIA RELEASE For immediate release CENTRAL LAKES TRUST CONTINUES ITS SUPPORT OF SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANISATIONS Central Lakes Trust this week approved grants totaling over $300,000 to twelve social service agencies which provide welfare services in its region. This funding is targeted at supporting these organisations with their annual operational costs. Each organisation provides its own unique service which includes social welfare officers, budgeting advisors, family support, care of the elderly, friendship networks, victim support, food banks, and support with mental illness and abuse prevention. Central Lakes Trust approved 35 Operational Grants in its financial year ending 31 March 2015, totaling almost $900,000. “This is a significant figure of our annual grants budget and highlights the large number of social service agencies that deliver important services to a wide cross section of our community of about 40,000 people” said Paul Allison, Chief Executive, Central Lakes Trust. Central Otago Friendship Network received a grant of $8,958 to help it to continue to deliver its unique community-based initiative of promoting friendship for people in the Alexandra, Clyde and Cromwell areas, who, because of disability and illness, are at risk of becoming socially isolated. “We have had a number of grateful and appreciative comments regarding the work of Central Otago Friendship Network recently, so we believe the service to be in very good hands”, said Jan Pessione, Interim Chairperson. The most significant improvement will come from the installation of purpose built and industry standard art shelving. This will ensure the art is stored correctly, safely, stably and is accessible, and it will mean greater use of the collection”, said Rachel Welfare, Manager, Central Stories. Recently the NZ Alpine Club delivered a bolting course for some of its members. As a result of a Central Lakes Trust grant of $2,000 the Club can now put those skills into action by developing more climbing areas with the purchase of new bolting equipment. “Because of the nature of the rock in our region, placing bolts is the best way to make it safe”, said Ian Knights, Chairperson, Central Rock Climbing Club.
