YEAR 11 ESL GEOGRAPHY ASSESSMENT TASK 2 Investigate and describe one earthquake OR one volcanic eruption Distribution date: Tuesday 4th May Due date: Tuesday 25th May Your task is to choose ONE case study of an earthquake or a volcanic eruption and research the causes and outcomes of the event and present the information in a short written report. The following headings are a guide to organising your report. Make sure you list all your sources of information in your bibliography. 1. Location – explain where and when the earthquake or volcanic eruption occurred. Include a map. 2. What happened – describe the earthquake or volcanic eruption. Include the size of the earthquake, how large an area was affected, how long the effect continued etc. If you can include information on why it occurred at this place. 3. The outcomes – describe the effects of the earthquake or volcanic eruption on people, the economy and the natural environment. 4. Rescue and relief – briefly describe the rescue efforts and relief/aid provided. Consider both short term and long term relief. 5. Other occurrances – have earthquakes or volcanic eruptions occurred in this area before or since the case study you are describing. How common are they? Why are they common or not common in this area? 6. Preparing for disaster – describe some of the ways the population living in this area were prepared for the earthquake or volcanic eruption or what measures have been taken to prepare for future earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. 7. Bibliography – include a list of all the sources of information you use.
